Carver superintendent forum moved up CHRONICLE STAFF REPORT .-j.-L- y v ,? ,, * V'^ In an apparent response to requests by the public to push back the application date for superintendent can didates, the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Board of Education has moved up the date of a public forum at Carver High School. me board is holding a series of forums at sites around the county to allow resi dents to take part in the search process for the next superintendent. Current' Super Don Martin is slated to retire in June. The fact that die Carver forum, the last in the series, was originally slated for Jan. 8, a week after the Jan. 3 application deadline for prospective superintendent candidates, did not sit well with many. The Board had been urged to push back the application deadline until at least all the forums had been conducted. The Carver forum will now be held on Thursday, Dec. 20 at 6 p.m. A forum is also slated for this evening (Thursday, Dec. 13) at 6 p.m. at East Forsyth High School. In addition to the forums, the school board is using surveys and organizational statements to gather public input. A link to the online survey confound at wsfcskl2.nc .us! suptsurvey. Paper copies can be requested by call ing 336-727-2696. Owen vented. In 2001, Dr. Owen established Kybele, who was the goddess of childbirth in ancient Anatolia (now modern-day Turkey). Owen was a Fulbright Scholar in Turkey (1997-1999) and helped establish an obstetrical anesthesia service at Uludag University. In September 2004, Owen returned to IHirkey with a delegation of eight obstetric anesthesiologists from prestigious universities throughout the US and United Kingdom to teach regional anesthesia for childr birth. She also co-authored the first textbook of obstetric anesthe sia, which was published in Turkey in 2004. Kybele brings American, Canadian, Australian and European healthcare professionals together to work in teams that travel to host countries. Since 2004, Dr. Owen and her Kybele team members have conducted medical training in Turkey, Croatia, Ghana, Georgia, Armenia, Romania, Egypt, Mongolia and Brazil; sponsored 16 major in-country medical confer ences; and trained hundreds of doctors and nurses. The sea sonal vaccine coverage varied across the eight universities from 14 per cent to 30 percent, which was considerably less than half of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' I 2020 Healthy People goal of 80 percent coverage for healthy persons a o /? a _* is 10 years 01 age. Choosing the best candidate possible will greatly impact on our collective ability to continue to improve public education in our community. You can help make a difference by making your voice heard! There are two upcoming public forums, hosted by the Winston-Salem/ Forsyth County School Board, to hear from the community on what qualities the next school superintendent should have. The forums will take place as follows: ? Thursday, Dec. 13, in the auditorium at East Forsyth High School (2300 W. Mountain Street, Kernersville, NC, 27284) ? Thursday, Dec. 20, in the auditorium at Carver High School (3545 Carver School Road, Winston-Salem, NC, 27105) Each forum will begin at 6 p.m. and start with a brief explanation of the hiring process. Attendees will have an opportunity to offer their opinions. Spanish-language interpreters will be present. The forums will be filmed and available for viewing on the school system's website: wsfcs.kia.nc.us For those unable to attend, surveys will be available beginning Nov. 29 to give board members feedback. The surveys will be available on the school system's website and in paper form, and both English and Spanish copies will be available. Please plan to attend a forum. If you are unable to attend, please visit the school system's website and take the survey.
