Santa drops by
rec center gathering
SPECIAL TO THE
CHRONICLE
The Carver High
School Marching Band
arrived at the W. R.
Anderson Center with
drums playing and horns
blaring.
Band members were
joined by die cheerleading
group from Carter
Vocational High School
and the Winston Lake
Family YMCA's Jazzy
Jumpers at the Center's
annual Community
Christmas Celebration.
The Center's basketball
court was transformed into
a stage where talented
singers and performers
entertained. But all the
attention turned to Santa
and his elves once they
made their entrance.
Hundreds of children,
and even a few adults, were
afforded the opportunity to
sit on Santa's lap to pose
for pictures and tell him
their Christmas wishes.
Having Santa at die event
has been a tradition since
2005. Each child received
candy and fruit from Santa.
All the items were donated
by the community.
"It was a night when the
community came together
and hosted a special event
for our children," stated
Center Supervisor Bryant
McCorkle.
Next Level Track Club
was the event's co-sponsor,
along with the City of
Winston-Salem's
Recreation & Parks
Department. Dozens of
volunteers - including
many from the Next Level
Thick Club - were on hand
to help manage the gather
ing and serve a hot dog sup
per.
Other performers
included the step team from
Flat Rock Middle School,
the HYPE Line Dancers,
the Carolina Stars, Positive
Image Performing Arts,
Shaneika Hamlet and
Trevon Graham.

SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE
Salem College broke ground Tuesday on a new student center. The college's
Board of Trustees recently voted to proceed with construction, slated for comple
tion in the spring of 2014.
School officials say that the new facility will showcase the vibrant campus and
act as a nub tor student activ
ity. The student center will
feature a caf6, bookstore, the
ater, student lounge, meeting
rooms and a student organiza

Architecture + Interiors has
designed the $6.8 million
project that will be built by
Frank L. Blum Construction
to be modern and open while

Hall, the center will be the
first new building erected on
Salem's campus since 1982.
"At Salem, our students are the heart of our mission. We are delighted that the
new center will be located in the heart of campus and will provide a hub for student
events and gatherings," said Susan Pauly, president of Salem Academy and
College. "It is especially appropriate that our newest building will pay tribute to
one of our core values - community- and we look forward to generations of stu
dents and friends enjoying the new facility in the future."
