Sit-in movement focus of school's Read-in SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE ' On Friday Feb. 8, stu dents at Diggs-Latham Elementary School gath ered in the gym for a "Read-In" event to com memorate the "Sit-In Movement" from the 1960s Civil Rights Movement. Guests from the Anderson High School Alumni Association, Friends of Diggs-Latham, area churches, the school's Central Office and teach ers from the school greet ed students at reading stations. Each reader shared some history of the Greensboro and Winston Salem sit-ins and dis played such artifacts as Rente cloth, art, and photographs before read ing to students from books related to Black History Month and to famous African Americans. Many teachers and students were dressed in Afro-centric attire or wore something orange, which represents unity. The celebration ended with a small recep tion for guests. Each guest received a special gift from the school, including a handmade clay magnet. The Read-In to honor the Sit-In Movement was organized by the Arts Team and Black History Committee under the direction of Amanda Gordon, the art teacher who serves as the Specialist and Committee Chairperson. Home Moravian Church, which is one of the school's community partners, sponsored the reception. On Friday, Feb. 22, the school will complete its celebration of Black History Month with an assembly that will include a keynote speaker and performances by stu dents and members of the community. Highland Ave., and The Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina present the Annual Celebration of the Life of Absalom Jones, the first African American priest of the Episcopal Church, on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 4 p.m. The Rt. Rev. Michael B. Curry will be the Celebrant. Feb. 26 AKONI hosts special worship service AKONI, Wake Forest University School of Divinity's student organiza tion, will present its annual African American History worship service on Hiesday, Feb. 26 at 11 a.m. in Wait Chapel, 1834 Wake Forest Rd. Dr. Marcus Cosby, pas tor of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church in Houston will be the guest speaker. The public is invited to attend. Ongoing House of Faith has Prophets' School House of Faith World Outreach Worship Center, 1384 West Sedgefield Drive, will host its School of the Prophets every Saturday from 11 a.m.-l p.m. Apostle Douglas Blair is the instruc tor.
