I Peppers from page B4 believe that the period refers to The Captivity while others are convinced that it is Jewish suffering at the hands of foreigners" (The New Interpreter's Bible Commentary, vol. VII). As the angel speaks, Daniel falls to the ground in a trance. Gabriel sets him on his feet and declares; "Listen." ine ram is tne duel kingdoms of Media and Persia. The shorter horn is the king of Media and Cyrus, the longer horn is Persia who defeated them and kept on marching in three directions. No power could stop them. The male goat is the king of Greece (no longer city-states) Alexander, the Great. He comes from the west with a horn between his eyes. During its charge, the hom is broken and four smaller horns appear. Just to clarify, Alexander creates a huge empire stretching from India and the Caspian Sea to all lands that touch the eastern Mediterranean Sea. This includes Egypt. He is the person that named quite a few cities after him self (Alexandria). This mighty emperor will die at the height of his reign mys teriously in 323 B.C. in Babylon. There are no heirs, so four leading gener als (the small homs) divide the empire. As the smaller empires begin to crumble, a wicked master of intrigue rises in their midst. Destruction is on the loose as he bnngs down the mighty and desecrates the Temple. The dishonorable will prosper. This ruthless leader will think that he is invincible. Most scholars agree that this person is Antiochus Epiphanes (175 164 BC). Some go so far as to call him the Antichrist in the Book of Revelation. Gabriel assures Daniel that this ruler will fall but not at the hands of humans. Application: There have been some good times in life. By the same token, the rough times came also. A faithful person doesn't run, hide or become pes simistic; instead, they stand trusting God no matter what. While Daniel's vision was for the Jews primarily, there are implications for all humanity. Kingdoms, empires and nations come and go. Some start out good and become drunk with power. There are some political entities that origi nate from evil and keep pur suing it. A few of them seem invincible but God in His time and way will topple each of them. No human power remains on top for ever. That's not God's way! The future seems dim with corruption, sickness, injus tice and any other evil lurk ing in the shadows. Take heart. God is still in control. Hold fast to your faith. For the millions of people, including children, facing oppression of any kind, it becomes the duty of believ ers by the grace of God to act on their behalf. Trust God. His po\ver to use one or a small group to change the world is something to behold. Macedonia Holiness Church Of (iod Of The Apostolic Faith, Inc. Rabup RX. WIk, Sr. D J)^ S.TJ). ?
