Graduation includes honors for alumni SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE , Carver High School and Jacket Integrated Academy graduated on June 8. The two schools graduated 160 students, many of whom have been accepted to college or into the armed forces. Rev. James E. Cook, senior pastor of St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church, gave the keynote address, telling the grad uates that it s their responsibility to become what God has destined them to become. "It's good to have your high school diploma," he said. "It's an accomplish ment to walk across this stage today and receive a high school diploma. But you are just beginning. God has a unique plan for each of you, you're just beginning." Shareef Holston, Carver's valedictori an, and Asha Piggott, valedictorian of Jacket Integrated Academy, also spoke. "I'm proud to be Carver High School Yellow Jacket," Holston said. "Regardless of the superficial ideas and beliefs of some in the community about former and current Carver students, we have achieved what others think is impossible." Piggott said, "We came to this place together to learn, grow and share. We now pause to celebrate. Time and space may separate us, but no matter where our pathways take us, we will always be the Jacket Integrated Academy Class of 2013." In addition to honoring the graduates. Principal Ronald Travis saluted two Carver High School alumni. Dr. Dionne P. Galloway, class of 1994, and Mr. Darron Wilks, class of 1997, were both honored as Alumni of the Year. Upon graduating from Carver High School, Dr. Galloway attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a Morehead Scholar. She is current ly a practicing OB/GYN in Eden. Wilks entered the business sector upon graduating and has established himself as an entrepreneur.
