She was the daugh ter of the late Mr. & Mrs. I umoc J UIIIVJ A . Diggs, grand daughter of the late Bishop & Mrs. Jefferson Davis Diggs and the late Mr. & Mrs. Solomon Kennedy. She was born October 11, 1917 in M ary v i1le, TN. She graduated from Atkins High School with honors and W-S Teachers College in 1938. She received a Master of Art degree in Teaching and Supervision of the Visual Arts from Columbia University. She accepted a position as head art teacher in September, 1938 at Hillside Park High School, Durham, NC. In 1945 she was appointed Art Supervisor at one-half of the Durham elementary schools. After desegregation she became Director of Art for the Durham City Schools in 1970 and held that position until she retired June, 1979. While living in Durham she was active in St. Titus Episcopal Church and on the boards of: Durham Arts Council. NCCU Art Museum. Substance Abuse, and the Coalition of Battered Women. She held mem berships in th? Retired School Personnel, the NC Education Association, National Art Education Association, Life Member of NEA. Friends of Stanford Warren Durham County Library, and the W-S State University National Alumni Association. She was a Golden Soror of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (69 years), and the Alphabette and Bridge-A-Dette Clubs of Durham. She renewed her membership at St. Stephen's when she moved to Winston Salem in 2003. She was very close to her family and A.A U1U IIWI lUIgtl birthdays. She traveled extensively in Great Britain. Europe. Asia. Africa, South America, the USA, and the Caribbean Islands. Jessie also loved reading and playing bridge. She is preceded in death by her husband. William P. Kearney; her brother, James T. Diggs. Jr.; her sisters, Rachel D. Wilkinson and Hannah D. Atkins; and a niece. Beverly D. Sharp. She is survived by her sister, Gloria D. Banks, and brother. Dr. Edward O. Diggs; also the following nieces and nephews: Charles N. Atkins, Edmund E. Atkins (Vera), Valerie A. Alexander, Janifer D. Clayton, Edward O. Diggs, 11 (Marianna), Lisa C. Diggs. and Sharon D. Fletcher; and other rela tives and friends. A memorial service will be held Saturday. June 22, 2013 at 11:00am for the Ivy Beyond the Wall ceremony, 11:30am for receiving friends, and 12:00pm for the service at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.
