Super visits Hanes i ?-?i Submitted Photo Winston Salem/Forsyth County Schools Superintendent Dr. Beverly Emory was the guest speaker for the February "Breakfast with Bailey" conversation at Hanes Magnet School. She discussed the "Importance of Education" with a small group of female students, candidly giving her take on the gravity of exceeding expectations and making learning a lifelong habit. Community from page HI Omega Talent Hunt applications The annual Omega Psi Phi Talent Hunt Contest will take place on Sunday, March 9 at 3 p.m. at the Anderson Center at Winston-Salem State University. All music stu dents in grades 9th through 12th are eligible. Contestants must play an instrument or sing semi classical/classical music. Cash prizes will be award ed. Medicare help The Medicare Low Income Subsidy program will be at the Carver School Road Branch Library. 4915 Lansing Drive, on Friday, March 14 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. to provide assistance and answer residents' ques tions. The program helps qualified Medicare recipi ents pay for their Medicare prescription drug program costs, such as premiums, deductibles and coinsur ance. No appointment is necessary. Dance Garden of Iris Temple #220, 1405 N. Patterson Ave., will present a St. Patrick's Day/Birthday Dance on Friday, March 14 from 8 p.m. - 1 a.m. Admission is $5. Black Rep auditions Auditions for the North Carolina Black Repertory Company's 2014 Marvtastic Talent Extravaganza Competition will be conducted Monday, March 31 and Tiiesday, April 1 from 7 - 10 p.m. at The Arts Council Theatre, 610 Coliseum Drive. Cash prizes will be awarded. The competition is open to individuals and groups of all ages and to performers of drama, music and dance. Blues concert "Blues from the Underground," featuring the Underground Funk & Blues Band, is held every first Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Underground Theatre at Community Arts Cafd, 411 West Fourth St. The perform ance by the core band is followed by an open com munity jam. There is a $5 cover. 'Balance' series Mars Hill Baptist Church, 1331 E. 4th St., will hold the eight-part series "A Matter of Balance" to educate the elderly community about the dangers of falling. Let us Know news@ wschronicle.com UNCSA opera students win awards SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) opera studenLs recently won a total of five awards at the Southeast Regional Finals of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions at Clayton State University in Atlanta. Tenor Jonathan Johnson won second place and three awards totaling $2,500. He received the W.K. Lomason Memorial Award, the Mrs. Gilbert W. Humphrey Award and the Southeast Region Award. Bass Daren Jackson won the Peg Gary Encouragement Award and the Atlanta Opera Guild Encouragement Award, totaling $ 1,000. The Metropolitan Opera National Council annually sponsors nation wide auditions to discover exceptional young talent; to provide a venue for young ^pera singers to be heard by a representative of the Metropolitan Opera and to assist those with the greatest potential in their development; and to search for new talent for the Metropolitan Opera and its young artist develop ment program. Johnson, from Macon, Ga., is a student of Marilyn Taylor. He received his Master of Music from UNCSA in 2013 aiyl is completing a Professional Artist Certificate as a fel low of the Fletcher Opera Institute. In April, he will join the Ryan Opera Center at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. ? Wilmington native Jackson is a college senior studying with Glenn Siebert. Johnson and Jackson advanced to the Southeast Regional Finals as equal first-place winners of the North Carolina District Auditions of the Metropolitan Opera National Council, held in January in Charlotte. The Southeast Region includes Florida. Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Regional first place winners advance to the national semi-finals in New York City. Jackson /I MM.
