Local teen wins equestrian competition SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Alaya McCarter recently participated in the 91st "Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show Competition at the Blowing Rock Equestrian Preserve. On the first day of the two-day event, qualifying Yides took place. Alaya placed third out of six riders. On the following day, riding with her 13 and under class fellow riders, she came in first place and was crowned as the Grand Champion in the American Saddlebred Three Gated Show Pleasure Championship. Alaya, 13, has been riding horses since she was three. Presently, she rides for Legacy Saddlebred, which trains horses to eventually pair them with riders for show competitions. "Alaya has a lot of natural talent for horses and is very well poised when riding," said Legacy Saddlebred Owner and Trainer Jamie Jankowicz. Alaya has successfully participated in horse com petitions throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. She is a rising eighth-grade honors student at Jefferson Middle School, where she is a cheerleader and a member of the National Junior Honors Society. Her other hobbies include reading, writing and watching television. She is a member of Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian Church, where she sings in the Radically Anointed Youth (RAY) Choir. Her parents are Bishop Sheldon M. McCarter and Rev. Joyce McCarter, the senior pastor and co pastor of Greater Cleveland Avenue. City native is a cookie-selling champ in Philly area SPECIAL TO THE CHRONIC! 1 The top Girl Scouts cookies seller in all of eastern Philadelphia, Penn. for two years in a row is Winston-Salem native Rachael Artanzia Thornton. The enterprising pre teen sold 3,600 boxes of cookies last year. This year, she exceeded that record by selling 3,830 boxes cookies. Rachael sold cookies at special events, to friends, local fire depart ments and at Drexel University (on Girl Scouts Day). Family members from California to North Carolina and every state in between did not escape her, "Wanna buy some Girl Scouts cookies?" inquiry. Rachael and the other top winners at her level were taken on a special tour of Philadelphia on June 7 that included vis its to historical and cul tural points. They enjoyed a live perform ance of the "Wizard of Oz" and lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe. On July 29, she is slated to join 23 other Girl Scouts from around the world for "Midwest Madness," an all-inclu sive flight to Wisconsin that will include a visit to the Mall of America; the largest water park in North America; and a Whitewater rafting on the Black River. There is also to be a pizza cruise on the Mississippi River, overnight camping and a visit to the State Fair and other fun activities. Rachael Thornton has made plans to sell the most Girl Scouts cookies again next year. She has already given notice to her parents, Greg and Michelle Vigil-Thornton, and her grandmother, Marlene Jones, and "nana," Artanzia R Jones, both of Winston Salem.
