Hundreds attend b-ball showcase SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The 24th Annual Hang the Net & Slam Dunk Contest was held July 24 at the Hanes Hosiery Community Center. More than 600 people were in attendance. In addi tion to the basketball action, the crowd was treat ed to a performance by the Mo Lucas Step & Drum Team. Hang the Net Creator and Hanes Hosiery Director Art Blevins pre sented several awards. Mo Lucas, a legendary mentor; former Wake , Forest University Sports Information Director John Justus; Mt. Tabor Football Coach Laymar Marshall; former WFU basketball star Guy Morgan; former WFU baseball star Joel Weston; former Canadian basketball league star Michael "Pop Bottle" Thomas; and Fox 8 sports reporter Danny Harnden received Living Legend Awards. Competitors went head to-head in several cate gories. Former WFU star Willie Griffin finished first in the Legends division. He was followed by former Anderson High star Bob Wilson, "Pop Bottle" Thomas, former Reynolds High star Bernard Roseboro, former N.C. Central star T. Ball and Hanes Hosiery legend Sam Mcllwain, respectively. In the College/Pro divi sion, former WFU standout CJ Harris finished on top. He was followed Yale's Mike Grace, the Josh Howard Foundation's Steve Nivens, WFU's Coron Williams and Southern Cal's An Stewart. In the Celebrity Shootout, Fox 8's Harden finished first. He was fol lowed by Winston-Salem State Head Basketball Coach James Wilhelmi, Winston-Salem Journal Reporter John Dell, WXII Anchor Cameron Kent and Greg "Catman" Good, the Carolina Panthers' Super Fan. Isiah Huffin won the Slam Dunk Contest. The other top finishers were: Reggie Grey, Andra King and Garren Loyd. This year's sponsors were DTLR fashions, Jamie Wilkes, Papa John's Pizza, Top Priority Care Services, LLC, Page's Printing, Weston & Associates. Inc.. Chick-fil A, Pepsi, Powerade, Omega Sports, Kona Ice and Dr. Diamond. Blevins said next year's Hang the Net will be the event's silver anniversary and likely his last. "1 will probably retire in a couple of years, after 1 get my daughter Kayla, who is a junior this year at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, through college. Bus waiting to be fillea SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs are part nering with Krispy Kreme and Mattress Firm for the 2014 "Stuff the Bus" campaign to collect school sup plies. The goal is to help ease the financial pressures that many Boys & Girls Club members' parents are experiencing by providing critical school supplies that will help their children begin the school year on a pos itive note. The community is being asked to help by dropping on new school supplies at any Krispy Kreme or Mattress Firm location in the Piedmont Triad. The "Stuff the Bus" cam paign kicked off on Friday, Aug. 1. "We see the need every day as families come to The Salvation Army for help," said Major James Allison, Area Commander for The Salvation Army of Winston-Salem. "It is only then safe to assume that if parents are unable to pay their rent or utilities that school supplies will be tough to buy. Our hope with the 'Stuff the Bus' campaign is not only to help lessen the financial burden for families, but also give kids the confidence they need to succeed." To encourage people to donate, Krispy Kreme and Mattress Firm are offering added incentives. Krispy Kreme will give out a free original glazed doughnut for a donated item like a pack of pencils, paper or crayons; and a free dozen of original glazed doughnuts for the donation of a backpack or more. Donations can be dropped off at any Triad-area Krispy Kreme through Aug. 22. Mattress Firm is offering $50 off any purchase with the donation of a bag of school supplies. School supplies of all types are needed, including notebooks, binders, pens, pencils, scissors, hand sani tizer and backpacks.
