Sigma Beta Club inducts eight new members SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Delta Sigma chapter of the Sigma Beta Club held an induction ceremony on Sunday. Aug. 9 in front of an audience of 70 family, friends, Sigma Beta Club mem bers and brothers of Phi Beta Sigma. The ceremony was held at Grace Fellowship Church on Brownsboro Road. The Delta Sigma chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. is the sponsoring chapter for the local Sigma Beta Club, a youth auxiliary of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity for males ages 8-18. The club's motto is "Next Generation of Leaders Accepting the Responsibility and Loving the Challenge." Under the direction of Dr. Parlette L. Moore, the Sigma Beta Club was founded in 1950. Brother Moore (20th Phi Beta Sigma International president) was con cerned about changing needs in our com munities and recognized the important role that Sigma men could play in the lives of our youth. The ceremony marks the third induc tion class into the Sigma Beta Club since it was re-chartered on October 12, 2012. Kimani M. Carter, Ezabai A. Diaz, Adrian L. Ellis, Justin P. K. Hines, Joshua A. Jackson, Nigel J. McDaniel Moore, Evan C. Simmons, and Tyshaun J. Williams were the newly inducted members. The Sigma Beta Clubs' four major principles of focus are on culture, athlet ics, social and educational needs. The Sigma Beta Club offers a unique opportunity to develop values, leadership skills and social/cultural awareness in our youth during their developmental years. Sigma Beta Club programs are geared to meet the needs of its members, but at the same time provide them with a well rounded outlook that is needed to cope with today's society. Phi Beta Sigma officials say they are confident that investing in our youth today will produce the effective leaders of tomorrow. CuiTent Sigma Betas took on an active role in the program. John A. Jackson III gave the welcome, and Jomaad K. Cater gave the invocation. Nasir I. McDaniel Moore read the purpose and Christopher A. Hinton gave the closing remarks. On the Sigma Beta Club Advisory Committee are Phi Beta Sigma members Willie L. Conner Jr., Daniel A. Crudup, Stuart D. Eaton, John A. Jackson 11, Reginald D. McCaskill, Darryl A. Prince Sr., and Tracy T. Webb. "We are looking forward to continu ing positive programming in the commu nity with the new members," officials said in a statement. Sigma Beta Club members attend national conference SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE _ Two Sigma Beta Club members, Nasir McDaniel-Moore and Tyrek Thompson, had the opportunity to attend the 2015 National Sigma Beta Club Leadership Conference of the National Sigma Beta Club Foundation Inc. recently. The Delta Sigma chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. is the sponsoring chapter for the local Sigma Beta Club, a youth auxiliary of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity for males ages 8 to 18. The club's motto is "Next Generation of Leaders Accepting the Responsibility and Loving the Challenge." One hundred young men attended the National Sigma Beta Club LeadershiD Conference (NSBCLC), which was held on the campus of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in Arkansas July 15-19. One significant con ference workshop with a partnership of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service focused on childhood obesity. While visiting the Witt Stephens Jr. Central Arkansas Nature Center, Sigma Betas learned about designing an active lifestyle and the connec tion between outdoor recreation and nature. Outdoor activity helps kids maintain a healthy weight, lowers stress and boosts their immunity and bone health. The NSBCLC held a Scholarship & Awards Breakfast at the William J. Clinton Presidential Library. During the breakfast, Nasir McDaniel Moore was awarded the Outstanding SBC Member Award for the Southeastern Region and was one of three (ages 8-13) recognized nationally. Also, pub lic program was held in the historic Central High School Auditorium. Conference attendees gathered to honor the heroic "Little Rock Nine," who fought for the right for quality education for all Americans. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity presented the school with a monetary donation toward the school's library during the program. UNCSA unveils new visual identity The University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) unveiled a new visu al identity to students, faculty and staff during its fall convocation and picnic on cam pus. Chancellor Lindsay Bierman, who is starting his second academic year, made the announcement. Bierman is the former editor in chief of Southern Living magazine. Specifically describing the typeface as "a series of interlocking shapes, representing the collaborative nature of the arts," he also explained the choice of colors - or lack thereof. "You'll notice that it's black and white," Bierman said. "Black and white is a uniform of sorts for the arts: Wouldn't you techies, budding ballerinas, actors, and members of our symphony orchestra agree?" referring to concert dress, class leotards, and universal behind-the-scenes wear. "It's also the fundamental, formative source of artistic creation: whether it's a play written in the pages of a book, music notes on a staff, a movie script on copy paper, or technical drawings. Black and white even conveys a sense of place in the arts: a black box space strewn with pages of a script. The blank white screen in a dark theater. It's classic, yet modern. Like us." In addition, he noted that black and white also serves to underscore and magnify the full spectrum of color that is UNCSA: "the vibrant conservatory community in which we live. Your art. in living color - rather than the logo - becomes the focus." ? 1 CLASSIFIEDS Bethabara Garden Apartments Located on Bethabara Road at the corner of Silas Creek extension near Wake Forest.
