A2 July 4, 2019 The Chronicle arry’rocks! BY MONICA FATORMA FOR THE CHRONICLE The Rock Out the Quarry event presented by Vulcan Materials on Friday, June 28, was a fun-filled evening replete with live music, fireworks, food, and activi ties for all ages, including our forty friends. From great entertainment and food, to bounce houses and games for children, there was something for everyone to enjoy. The music lineup included Darryl Little & Friends, New Dimensions and Hunter Hill. Free shuttles from nearby lots were provided by the city. For many, the most memorable part of the night was the spectacular fireworks display. Quarry Park, located in the south side of Winston-Salem, was operated as Pied mont Quarry from the 1920s to the 1970s before closing. Vulcan Materials donated the land to the city in 1988 and it was opened to the public in 2017. Quarry Park is open daily from 6 a.m. till dusk. Mandatory From page Al meeting, she has been raising questions about the course. Burke noted during the May 21 Curriculum Committee meeting, board members discussed the African American his tory course and decided to let experts in the area look into the required course. She then an nounced that the board will discuss including a required African Ameri can history course at the high school level, but the item won’t be up for dis cussion until October. “You know we have to follow a process. New courses come to the Cur riculum Committee for consideration at the Oc tober meeting. At our September Curriculum Committee meeting we will review background information about Afri can American history,” continued Burke. “We will hear from those ex perts on our staff and we will talk about implemen tation and any issues that may arise and then at our October meeting we will move it to the agenda. “I appreciate every body’s concerns about the wellbeing of our students, but please know I share ’your concerns also.” After the meeting, several members of Hate Out of Winston and the Local Organizing Com mittee stuck around to take photos. While they seem pleased with the progress they have made, many members let it be known that they won’t be satisfied until the course is added to the curricu lum.
