MOVEMENT Will Co-Operate in National Pay-Up Week Movement in February "Pay-Up Week will be observed by the merchants in inston-ISalem in uc eoid with the" movement of the mer chants throughout the United States, the date for the national, observance having been named as the latter part of the month of J-ebruary. The directors of the local association are planning a great campaign to make thi movement uioresuccrssnirrrf potr sible, than the iPiiy-l'p Week observed lie re ii Novemlter two years ago. At that time, the .merchants and their cui-tomeu co-oH'rsted and . as far as possible paid up the account, many of which had bn running for a long time and had reached high figures. As a re sult, the old .accounts were largely wiped out and business placed on a firmer basis. Tho merchants received their money and were able to pay their own obligations. The, credit ay si em is one thnt it would he almost impossible to' nltaudon al together, as it seems an absolute neces sity in many cases. If properly used, it in very valuable, hut when abused, it beonirs a burden both to the mer chant and tho consumer, retards the progress of business in general and de moralizes thn activities of the, (com munity. With a Jittlo extra effort on the part of 'the consumers and of the merchants in the city many of the old and long standing debts may be wiped out dur ing this week and business placed on a llrmer and sounder basis. To tho Editor of Tho Journal: Tho writer would like to bring before tho public the subject of the Warren Christy case .which has niennt mr.ny hours of deep thought. After seeing and talking with c.H r,f the parties in the case, I feel that the present sen! enco ough to be commuted to a life term, instead of a death penally, fo: a number of reasons: (1)1 feci that all of the truth has not been told in the ease and parties eonneetei with ti e ease know thinps that th.y have not told: 2) that those under death sentence have ng since made their pcaco wilh (!od :nd have proved themselves good pris ncrs and workers, and so would be of some value to the Ftate. B feel that a certain book published n the deed had its weight on. the pub lic mind and very likely on some who sat on tha jury. I i1io feel tint tin woman- in this case has not had the chance to be all she might have been and never had anyone to teach her about the higher things of life, until these last fow months, but lias pmven herself a changed woman in that time.
