THE LEADER. .1 MKS A. 1SOBINSON-. - - Editor. H IY .". "7.7. .....H NK Si, 1H79. A Good Xora ination. The press, cast mid west, is un .inimous, that the nomination of Tom Ewixg for governor of Ohio, is a masterstroke of poljcv for the Democrats. nnl that democratic Micccss in the State election is ren- dered almost certain. This opinion is based upon the supposition th;it KtviNO, being as greenback in sen timent as grcenbackers themselves, svill cause a large enough defection from that party to overcome the slight plurality of 3.000 which the republicans carried the last election. It is estimated that if only owe -ninth of the 38,000 grcenbackers' vote for him he can be readily elected It is 'rue that the greenback convention manifested an unreasoning deter minalion to resist all coalition, the walls ftf the hall in which tlic' mcl was cov ered with mottoes .denounc ing any attempt at coalition, and speakers who favored it were frown id down without ceremony, but there was a respectable minioritv which favored coalition. It is al most certain that as the canvass progresses that greenback voters will quietly desert to vote for a good greenbacker whom they can elect, rather than by attempting to elect their own candidate throw the State into the hands of a hard-money re publican. It is a part of the calcu lation also that a- considerable num ber of republicans are infected with the soft money heresy and will vote fonEwiNG. The points seem tobe well taken, subject only to 'the consideration that all speculations as to the course of the greenbacker : ire on a being with whose temper and degree of plasticity we are Very mperfectly acquainted. With all due allowance, however, the pros pect in Ohio is cheering, and we may, with a reasonable degree of confidence trust in that State to ad minister the first and most telling defeat to that party which would fain prop up its falling fortunes with the bayonet, and thus give the cue to a sweeping democratic v ictory in ;sso. A State Policy. The Henderson Harder jReview has some correct ideas in regard to matters of importance to our peo- pic. We endorse its views upon a policy for North Carolina. Until we come up to this point we cannot lake front ranks with more progres sive States of the Union. The Ite view observes that some of the bond holding financiers say that the great resumption and funding policy car ried forward by Secretary Sher man, has anchored in safety the finances of the country. Of course this is life to the idle bondholder but death is the industries of the people, from the fact that the mon- ey of the country, the life blodd of industry, has been very largely drawn into non-taxable bonds and left the business of the people to dwindle anil labor to starve. The late negro exodus is not due to any sentiment political, but for want of ihc just rewards of labor which are denied all oyer the country and per haps to a greater extent in Kansas than in Louisiana. North Carolina as well as the cn- tire South, has talked long enough about these things. It is time thai we should act. How can wc act ? What miust be done ? Can we not I 1 . ' .1 , 1 learn a lesson irom tne tedei gov- ernment ? Can we not adopt a policy of protection that will induce capital to come and seek investment in our manufacturing and mining jtidustries ? ., Sin ei v we can. Let us modify our organic law so that our legislature may offer exemption, for a series of years, lo capital. Then it will seek our borders. Then oui resources will be developed, oui commerce, ami agriculture will thrive and prosper, and a grand s s tem of Internal Improveinents will be perfected and freighted with tlu ast tonnage of the farm, the fac tory and the mine. North Carolina must protect her self. She must feed and clothe her self. She must provide her own improveinents of industry. In tine, she must adopt a North Carolina policy. Her children have Ioiil,' enough sought homes in distanl lands. Henceforth she must pro tect them and keep them at home to help, and use .the means in her '.each to induce others to come, and the is not distant when the name o Xorth Carolina will be pronounced ith pride in every American State. A number of the State panels have already hoisted the names of certain gentlemen as their preference lor the next Democratic nominee for Governor. The Free Lance sug gests that "if the Hon. Y. M. Ron Bi'xs tloes not w ish to die a prema ture political death, he had better induce his over zealous journalistic friends to permit his name to re main quiet for the present. One can, enter too soon upon such a' race equally as well too late.' The I'ree Lance is right. All this talk about reducing the President's salary is mere bosh. The Republicans will not do it as lon it. as they arc in power, and the Dem ocrats would not do if if a ma an oi ,i. T, ., ioii p.tn were i rcsment. Educatioii.
