Yesterday at noon' Abram Con nelly, an aged man, took his seat at the dinner table at the residence of Mr. Joseph W. Kee, on Tryon street, near the Lutheran church and had commenced to eat his Baeal when his heiuLsuddenly fell forward on the table and he was dead before any one' could jump to his side. Mr. Connelly was 82 year of age and was a rock mason by tr.ide. He had been drinking heavily for the past few days, and this fs supposed .to have brought on an attack of apoplexy. Char lotte Observer. Adam is said to be the only man who never tantalized his wife about "the way his mother used to cook." ' - We have news from Marion, N. C, to the effect that the'brothers-in-law, Preston Teale and'Marshall Jones, who have been bad friends for sometime quarreled a few days ago. , Teale-went' home, Jones fol lowing him, and entered his house. Jones attempted to follow when Teale sprang out and attacked Jones with a butcher knife, inflict ing thirteen wounds, orie in the abdomen and the others in the back. Jones is still alive but can not recover. , Thirteen' thousand pounds of red pepper were received at La redd, Texas, a few days ago, from Mexico. NorfolSc, Va., September 13. Bankers, merchants and capitalists of Norfolk met today and resolved to subscribe all-the money neces sary, build a railroad .to bring the Richmond & Danville system into Norfolk. George S. Scott and W. P. Clyde, members of the Syndicate controlling the Rich- lrrond & Danville Railroad, were invited from Richmond to exam ine this harbor and its facilities. They, spent today inspecting the shipping advantages and terminal facilities of the port. They will submit the proposition of the con ference to the syndicate Trenton, September 13. The Democratic State Convention as sembled here at noon today and organized by the election of Geo. d. Vanderbift as permanent chair man. Lyman Abbott was nomi nated for Governor on the second ballot, amid great confusion The Albright men jumped on their seats, cursed the nomination and declared they would bolt. A mo tion to make the nomination unan imous was howled down and with out adjournment the convention dispersed. Norfolk Ledger,: A party of enginears started out this morning to survey the much-talked of rail road from here to Goldsboro, N. C. The road is said to be the N. Y. & Cnarleston Railroad. The terminus in this city will be at what is known j as Milligan's Woods and the Bear Trap. The road will be an air line .from this city to Goldsboro, EUGENE E. GRAY, Fire Ins. Agency, Winston, N.
