The steamer Coptic which arrived here yesterday from Hons; Konar brings advice to the effect that cholera has broken out at Pekin. A Bludgeon and a Broken Skull. Rocky Mount, N. C, Sept. 24. Richard Watson and Timothy Edwards, both colored, were play ing cards at Eason's Cross Roads near here to-day. They got into a dispute but not an angry one when Henderson Parker, another negro, being intoxicated came up. Hearing the dispute and thinking that Watson and Edwards were about to fight, he pieked up a bludgeon and struck Watson over the head breaking his skull and causing instant death. Parker fled and has not been captured, but officers are on his track near Wel-don. A Chance for Another Duel in Virginia. Richmond, Sept. 24. The little town of Fincastle, the capital of Botetourt county, is in a Mutter of excitement over an anticipated duel between Thomas. J. Wilson, .a prominent politician, arid deputy sheriff S. B. Crush. Sheriff Crush's brother has absconded, leaving large debts behind, and Wilson re ported the facts to the press. For this Crush posted Wilson as a liar, and the latter demanded a retrac tion, which Crush refused, and was then asked to resort to the held of nonor. This has not yet been done nor has any settlement been made. The officers of the law are in pursuit of Wilson, who is said to have gone to Staunton, Va. They are . well known and trouble is apprehended. Raleigh News-Observer: There is a big Newfoundland dog -in this city, a great pet, which has for over a year regularly drank two cups of coffee each day. He drinks his coffee daintily, never spilling a drop out of the cup. If it is not sweet enough he merely looks at it after tasting, and when more sugar is added he drinks it. : Travelers from the mountains say that the hills have almost been washed away. The rains have been frequent and heavy and all the streams are booming along out ' f the banks. A lot of summer ourists are up there water bound. Charlotte Journal. The Army Worm. Nkwp.ern, N. C, Sept. 24. The army worm is doing consid erable damage to the crops in this section of the State. Reports frcra all the eastern counties show that the crops are short, owing to the drought and recent excessive rains and heavy storms. Perhaps a fair estimate of the cotton and corn crops is one-half the average, and of the rice crop nearly the average. The new Bulgarian cabinet will be Russian in its tendencies. EUGENE E.
