A Bludgeon and a Broken Skull.
Rocky Mount, N. C, Sept. 24.
Richard Watson and Timothy
Edwards, both colored, were play
ing cards at Eason's Cross Roads
near here to-day. They got into
a dispute but not an angry one
when Henderson Parker, another
negro, being intoxicated came up.
Hearing the dispute and thinking
that Watson and Edwards were
about to fight, he pieked up a
bludgeon and struck Watson over
the head breaking his skull and
causing instant death. Parker fled
and has not been captured, but
officers are on his track near Wel-don.
A Chance for Another Duel in
Virginia.
Richmond, Sept. 24. The little
town of Fincastle, the capital of
Botetourt county, is in a Mutter of
excitement over an anticipated
duel between Thomas. J. Wilson,
.a prominent politician, arid deputy
sheriff S. B. Crush. Sheriff Crush's
brother has absconded, leaving
large debts behind, and Wilson re
ported the facts to the press. For
this Crush posted Wilson as a liar,
and the latter demanded a retrac
tion, which Crush refused, and
was then asked to resort to the
held of nonor. This has not yet
been done nor has any settlement
been made. The officers of the
law are in pursuit of Wilson, who
is said to have gone to Staunton,
Va. They are . well known and
trouble is apprehended.
Raleigh News-Observer: There
is a big Newfoundland dog -in this
city, a great pet, which has for
over a year regularly drank two
cups of coffee each day. He drinks
his coffee daintily, never spilling
a drop out of the cup. If it is not
sweet enough he merely looks at
it after tasting, and when more
sugar is added he drinks it. :
Travelers from the mountains
say that the hills have almost been
washed away. The rains have
been frequent and heavy and all
the streams are booming along out
' f the banks. A lot of summer
ourists are up there water bound.

The Army Worm.
Nkwp.ern, N. C, Sept. 24.
The army worm is doing consid
erable damage to the crops in this
section of the State. Reports frcra
all the eastern counties show that
the crops are short, owing to the
drought and recent excessive rains
and heavy storms. Perhaps a fair
estimate of the cotton and corn
crops is one-half the average, and
of the rice crop nearly the average.
The new Bulgarian cabinet will
