Richmond, Maine, Sept. 29.- Intelligence was received here to day of the suicide of Miss Mary Goff, a beautiful young woman living near Chambersburg. She stood before a mirror upon which was arranged a lot of toilet articles and roses. She then slowly cut her throat from ear to ear and did not cease until she saw that the jugular vein was severed. In a. gallery cut in the solid rock within a gorge about four miles from the Nile, to the east of Thebes, a most valuable discov ery has been made of relics dating back to the times of the ancient Theban dynasties. They consist of four large papyri, each in a state of perfect preservation and of incalculable value to Egyptolo gists; 3,700 mortuary statues; the mummies of a large number of Theban kings, each with an ala baster canopic urn containing the heart and entrails of the deceased; fifteen enormous wigs, nearly two feet high, composed of frizzled and curled hair, belonging to Egyptian princesses, and nearly 2,000 other objects of interest. Washington, Sept. 29. It is estimated at the Treasury Depart ment that a reduction of the pub lic debt for the month of Septem ber will be about $15,000,000. -Youth and Beauty Win the Race Miss Phillips, the daughter of John Phillips, of the iron firm of Oliver Brothers & Phillips, of Pittsburg, eloped on Friday night with a glass-cutter named Fisher. The young people had been keep ing company for sometime, and a day or two ago the girl's parents forbade her having anything to do with her lover. About 10 o'clock at night Fisher called at the Phil lips residence in a carriage, halting in the rear of the house. The girl was ready and so was her mother. When the latter went to the front door the daughter ran out of the back door and thence across a potato field, followed by her moth er. Youth and beauty won the race. The young lady reached the carnage considerably in advance of her pursuer, and, being helped ih by her lover, Ihe vehicle rattled awav in the darkness. Pursuit was made, but the runaways sue ceeded in evading capture, and the next day they were married. Jos Bartholomew a respectable young man 18 years of age, living near Bethlenem church in Nash county, accidently shot himself in the breast while hunting on Monday. It is for $1, 000,000, given by the Norfolk & Southern Telegrapn Company to the American Trust Company, of New York. " A train on the Atchison & Santa Fe Railroad was attacked by a gang of cowboys in Kansas; the engineer was killed, the fireman fatally wounded, and the conduc tor shot at but escaped injury; the express car was attacked but the messenger repulsed the gang.
