A Race-Horse That Chews To bacco. Blackjwood Patchen is an invet erate tobacco chewer. He clam ors for the weed and is never per-' fectly at ease in his box stall un less masticating a cud. "To see hkn go out of the stable," remark ed the trainer, as he removed the horse's wire muzzle in order to give him a chew, which the animal received with a neigh of delight, "you would never ride behind him, he acts so frantically, but the moment he touches the road he becomes' as gentle as a lamb and travels closje to 2.30. He Is "a five-year-old, by Blackwoood out of a Patchen mare." N. Y. Mail and Express. Iredell had an elopement last week. Mr. John B. Goodnight wanted to tie to TMiss Mary J. Goodnight. Her' guardian first assented, and then (after the wed ding cakes were baked) dissented; whereupon the young couple ab sented, in the direction of States ville. It was a long night ride of 35 miles, but the plump and plucky bride concluded she could stand a bad night for the sake of the Goodnight she would get next morning. So the trip was made and Rev. W. A. Lutz gave them both a Goodnight, John getting his "Mary Jane," and she getting "John B." and their smiles il lumed even a wet sack of salt in the store of J. S., Leonard where the wedding occurred. Land mark. The authorities of the Narrow Gauge have bought the right to lay a third rail on the Western N. C. R. R., from Newton to Hickory and are to pay for the same $350, 00 per month . The rail ,;wil,l be laid at once and the trains will soon be running through' from Lancaster to Hickory. Tne road from Hickory to Lenoir will be rapidly built and it is thought will be completed by November ist. Lincoln Press. . Death from Eating Pota toes. Last Saturday little John nie Murr, son, of section-master Mnrr, who is stationed on the A. T. & O. Railroad at Davidson College, appeased his appetite on raw sweet potatoes, of which he ate a great quantity. He was shortly afterwards taken with se vere pains in his stomach which continued to grow worse and baf fled the skill of the doctors until Sunday, when the boy died. He was about 12 years old. ....The eel booni continues and there were several wagons on the streets from the Catawba yesterday. The fishermen say that the recent rise in the river which enables the eels to swim up the stream in schools, is the cause of the remarkable catch. One farmer near Rozzell's fjerr)r,caught 3,800 eels in three days and put them all in a com post heap. . .i.The cholera has become epidemic among the chick ens, about town, and is laying them on their backs by-tfee hun dred. One who has tried it re commends, the following as a sure remedy and preventive, and says that the use of it will save the poultry: With one quart of corn meal mix eleven drops of lauda num and a teaspoonful of soda, and feed to the fowls regularly.
