Items of Interest. - conference of submarine cable companies is to be held 'in Paris shortly. The cotton seed oil mills are paying $16 per ton for seed deUv ered at the. depots in Van Buren, Arkansas. - The yearling Jersey bull which sold at the Louisville Exposition for $2,000 was bred near Mobile, Alabama. Mrs. Gregory, the Atlanta artist, has received an order to paint a life size portrait of Gov. Bloxham, of Florida. , The brains of- Carey, the Irish informer who was killed by O'- Donnell at Port Elizabeth, weighed 61 ounces. On the 8th inst., the first dirt was thrown upon the line of the new Jacksonville and Atlantic railroad, in Florida, by Messrs. Genovar and Mickler, contractors. Rev. N. R. Pittman writes vs he has accepted the pastorate of the Baptist Church at Macon City, Mo. He says northwestern Missouri is a great and growing country. Anson Times. A Galveston man, who has- a mule for sale, hearing that a friend in Hauston wanted to buy a mule telegraphed him: "Dear Friend If you are looking for a No. 1 mule don't forget .me." Mr. L. V. Estes, of Blowing Rock, has stocked his "Silver Lake" with nearly 5,000 trout from the mountain streams since the fishing season. Hickory Press. Thos. L. Clingman, left yesterday for New York to meet a party of capitalists who desire to purchase his Electric Light, which promises to be a valuable inven tion. He has spent several thous and dollars in getting letters patent and putting the process in practical operation, in Europe as is required by the laws ofFrance, and other countries. Farmer and Mechanic. ! The steamer jL. H. Cutler ar rived from Jolly Old Field, last evening, with 300 bushels rice and other freight. The rice was put on this market to-day and sold at 95 cents to $1 per bushel. New berne Nut-Shell. Disreputable Women. The first night of Seeman's per formance at the Opera House quite a number of disreputable women gained entrance to the house. We learn they applied for admission again the next night but were refused. This was right. It is something Mr. Staub has nev er permitted in his opera house, though in other cities a special part of the auditorium is set apart for this class of people. Knox- ville (Tenn:) Tribune. The Justices of the Peace are requested to meet with the County Commissioners on the first Mon day in November for the purpose of electing a Superintendent of Public Instruction. ... The coun ty Board of Education was in ses sion on " Monday revising the school committeemen and other business pertaining to education. The Mocksville school district is to be divided, but the line has not been settled upon. .... There be ing a vacancy in the office of County Superintendent of Public Instruction will not interfere with the schools. The committeemen can employ teachers the same as heretofore. The Board of Educa tion will have to sign pay certifi cates provided there is no election.
