The First Case.
Washington, Nov. 2. There
was a flutter of excitement to-day
when an officer entered the Wash
ington City post office and arres
ted Levi L. Tate, a clerk in ih
office, on the charge of having
violated the civil service act, in
that he had collected five dollars,
from postal clerks for political
purposes. If found guilty of the
offense as charged, he will be
subject to a fine of not exceeding
five hundred dollars, or imprison
ment for a term of not exceeding
three years, or such fine and im
prisonment both, in the discretion
of the-court. " The Tate case is
the first of the kind under the
new law.
Wedding in Monroe. In
Monroe last Wednesday night Mr.
S. B. Bundy, a - successful young
merchant of that town, was mar
ried to Miss Bettie Stewart, one
of Monroe's fair young daughters.
The ceremony took place at the
residence 4 of the bride's father,
Mr. John D. sSteWart, 'and was
performed by Rev. P. J. Caraway.
The happy couple have gone to
Louisburg, Mr. liundy's old home,
to spend a few days. " The popu
larity of the contracting parties
was amply evidenced by the ex
tent and variety of the bridal
presents received, some of which
were quite costly, and. all hand
some. The Observer throws a
shower of congratulations after
them. Charlotte Observer.
We have seen within a few days
several accounts of the bad be
havior of men in not appearing at
the marriage after engaging the
affections and securing the prom
ises of young women. A man is
a great .villain who will thus trifle
with and humiliate a woman.

Remarkable Feat, of Strength.
A remarkable feat was recently
accomplished by John Macdon
ald, of Dundee, Scotland. His
brother Archibald was passing
through a field, when he was at
tacked by a bull, and, being a
cripple, attempted to defend him
self with a crutch. John ran to
his rescue, and, having ho weapon,
caught the beast by the horns,
and, with one supreme effort, gave
a sudden twist to the head, dislo;
eating the neck iy the jerk and
killing the bull. Mr. Macdonald
was at"dne time"champion athlete

A Tooth a Big as a Horse's
Head.
The tooth of a mastodon, which
was found twenty miles above the
mouh of Cannon Ball creek on a
sandbar,-is on exhibition in Bis
marck. Although it has crumbled
somewhat through the ravages of
time it still weighs about fifteen
pounds and is one of the molar
teeth. Judging from this mam
moth tooth the animal was of a
herbiverous nature and must have
been at least forty feet long and
twenty feet high, and its weight
must have been enormous. This
single tooth is almostas large as a
horse's head. Chicago Times.
A Faithful Old Negro. An
old colored man died on Messrs.
George and Albert Parrot's plan
tation last Monday, who was a
slave before the war, and when he
was made free he lived on with his
old master till he died, and then
lived with his young masters up
to the time of his death. His
name was George Parrot, and he
was 76 years old. He was fore
man of the farm at 18. He never
worked for anyone except a Parr
rot, and died within 200 yards of
where he was born. Kinston Free
