The riot was the work of Ma hone's scheming, to lay the foun dation for throwing out the vote of Pittsylvania county, in order to aid his plot to capture the State Senate. To-day his toenail gov ernor has stationed two companies of military in our streets, for which there was no occasion, but to aid in his scheme. . He has in structed his black allies in Dan ville, North Danville, Chatham, New Design, not to vote, and this is to make out a case of intimida tion, to further aid in his scheme. By throwing out the vote of. this county the Democrats will lose a Seneator and three Delegates. Danville Register, Dem. r' We learn froTtrrgctrernah'wtio has been upon the spot that in Gaston county, not far from the Whetstone Mountains, there is a very ancient tunnel, supposed to have been made by the early Spaniards. The probability is it is even older. . It is known to be a full hundred years old by the testimony of nged people who were living twenty years ago who learned from their fathers that' the tunnel was in their boyhood as it was in their children's time. We call the attention of Col. Cameron to this interesting fact in case he is not aware of its existence.- Wil. Star. The iron rails for the extension of the railroad to this place have arrived and a few weeks only will be necessary to make the road in readiness for the trains. The building of the trestle at the L. C. Mills will require probably three weeks. By the ist of De cember the last nail ought to be driven and the whistle of the en gine afford daily music to our people. Leaksville Gazette. m Ex-Mayor Howell, Gen. Slocum and Treasurer Witte of the Brook lyn:" bridge trustees, are in "favor of 'making the bridge free. Poisoned by Bologna Sausage. Reading, Pa., Nov. 5. Calvin Haines, his wife and three chil dren, residing at Topton, ten miles from here, were poisoned last night by eating bologna sausage purchased at the village store. They were all seized with spasms and vomiting. Two daughters who had not eaten any of the bo logna were not attacked. The youngest child died and the others are very ill. Warren county, Ga., boasts of of a resident who participated in seventeen- battles for the Lost Cause, was wounded several times, has been struck by lightning three times,, lay insensible from one shock three days, is now not more thaxutatt years of age and is. as healthy as any man and weighs over 200 pounds. At the election in Utah, on the 6th of August, 12,000 Mormons, living in polygamy, were excluded from the- pofis, according to the Edmunds law. No man or woman living in polygamy was allowed to vote or hold office. The Mor mons must go. . The funeral of the late Gen. James B Stedman took place at Toledo, Ohio, last Monday. Ten thousand persons were present. A carload of flowers was sent by friends in New Orleans. Mr. W. J. Young, the worthy superintendent for the Deaf and Dumb and the Blind is sick. His many friends will regret to hear of his sickness. Raleigh Visitor, Ten tramps were fined $1 each and costs in Greensboro on Mon day, and being unable to pay they had to work out the same. Tramps must go to work. The Raleigh Light Infantry re ceived the $1,000 prize at the competitive drill in Richmond last week. They were received by public demonstrations on their return home.
