We were much amused the oilier day with the Major's story of his first adveutmc in jewelry. In due t'.ine the Jtjjor got married, us all young folks aro bound to do, -and in the course of time, he found himself iu New Orleans with an extra hun dred dollsrs in his pocket. Determined to do tilings up handsomely, in the way of presenting' his wife with some costly pres ents, he marched into a jewelry store, resolied to spend thirty or forty dollars for trinkets, under th delusion that a sum o enormous would buy "eve rything and more tno." The ever attentive clerk waited on his summons, and handed out a variety of the "low priced," varyiiio. I'rum .one dollar to fifty. The Major examined (!.' r ssortmeiit v. ith a c rit Icaleye, feh of his forty dollars With a grandilo quent air, and otdered something expensive, fan cying llmt it ou! reach as high as "liiree cents." The clerk placed npoti a glas ease two 'moroc co covered buses, which, upon Mug opened, pre sented variety of necklices and finger-rings,. The Major eyed the collection in a very criticl rm.nner, and mid that he would take the largest box, demanding tlie price while jtulling out his ..wallet. .-'..::'.;- "Von can," said the clerk with solemnity, "have that box fur ten thousand dull irs." , luternully the Major felt astonished; ou l side he raseoolas a cucumber the price had gone 'ever liif pile,' and his expectations, just nine thousand nine hundred and seventy-five dollars. With a tang froii that sunk into the heart of the clerk, he aaiil ; "Is that tho highest priced jewelry you have in your store?" The clerk aW, "It Was just then." "Well," drawled the Major, waving hi hand eomewhal in the style of Julius Ca-sar, "this don't 'cost enot'gh for tue," and with a awing of gran deur be left the store. N. O. Drita. TO TUE fEOPLE CF KORTD CAROLIKA. ! The history of our Revolutionary struggle iu North Carolina is fertile in events both tragic and romantic; and in many instances the two am o connected as to be inseparable. Writers have been found in several porlions of tho Union, who have undertaken 10 re-ue front oblivion the Revolution ary incident of their respective localities ; but as yet North Carolina has found no one to undertake tiie task for her. Unworthy and incompetent as I am to do justice to the subject, and unprepared ns I am to devote that time and attention to it which its importance demands; yetl am willing to lend my feeble aid in bringing up from the abyss of forgetfulness the deeds and transactions of our Revolutionary sires, the events of a by-gone gener ation that Sived in "tlie time that tried men's souls," snd at a period (as is now apparent) when the world began lo throw offthe shackles of tyranny, nnd to emerge from the darkness of oppression, ignorance, and superstition, into the light of liber ty, knowledge and true religion. r It is my design tocollect andarrange, in the form of sketches, tales, Hiid le(jendary, romance,'the Rev olutionary incidents of the State ; uud I shall feel thankful to any person informed of any event or incident worthy uf note, to communicate the same to me. Will (he people of the State aid me in my undertaking?
