Taylor's paper, the Bible Header, published at this offiioe. It is a splen did little monthly, and deserves all the good things that can be said of it. Five of the county road, horses were sold here yesterday a week ago. They brought $241, an average of- $48.20. This was really more than we expected they would bring. The sixth horse was slightly lame and the authorities thought it best not to offer him for sale j until he was well, so there is one more for sale yet. A large crowd attended the sale, arret bidding was brisk ; We gather from1 a communication received, that Mr. Geo. W. Our toDacco market will open again next Monday and we look for busy times. There is a large quanity of tobacco to be marketed and our ware housemen are anxious to sell it while bur corps of buyers are ready to take all that will come. Dr, M. D, King, of Chapel Hill, j spent his Christmas at home with his j father. Mr. P. P. King, of Oakville. j ne aocior paia the ieoord onice a pleasant visit while in the county. We are glad to learn that he is doing- well in his new home, practicing his profession, dentistry. Rev. W; B. Morton paid our sanctum very pleasant visit this week . He has resigned the pastoraee of the Louisburg Baptist church which he has been serving for the last five years, and is now without a pastoraee. It is very probable, of the many calls he has received, that he will locate in Roxboro, N. C. The beautiful county residence of the late Mrs, Prank M. Hyman, on the Turnpike near Afton, was destroyed by fire last Saturday night. No one was living in the house and it is un knov.n how it caught on fire, There is some talk of its being the work of an incendiary The Store house in the coiner of the yard was destroyed aliso. We had a pleasant call this week from R-3v. J. A. Whilted, colored, of Ruleigh. There isn't a man in the state that is doing a grander, better work than he, m trying to uplift his race in the knowledge of christian duties nd obligations He is grate ful for the assistance that the white people all over the state are rendering him in ids noble work; The white Baptist church at Aulauder, N. C, Bev. L. M; Curtis pastor, has invited the "next New Era Institute to be held there next week at the expense of his church. These Institutes are doing great good among the colored preachers of our state, led by that consecrated man of God, Rev. J. A. Whitted, at. one time pastor of the colored Baptist church here. Last Sunday tifternooh the fire bell rang oat, and people ran from all parts of town to see the cause. R; D. Flemiuer & Co. had several bales of cotton m their bact lot which were on lire, or some eight or nine of them were. It is not known Low the Mte originated but it is more than probable that some cigarette smoker caused it. The burning bales were hauled out to Dr. Fleming's and isolated from every thing else. The loss is estimated at some fifty or sixty dollars; ' The proprietors of Rheumacide, the new vegetable compound for the cure of rheumatism, Seem to think they have a great reniedv and claim that cures are the best evidence. Cures should be the yardstick by which medicines are measuied. See advertisement in another column. 37-4m, A Man Killed. John Evans, colored near Wise, this county, was shot and killed by Mr. Piummer . Wilson, last Thursday the 24th ult. It looks like it is impossible to hear the real facts about the case. Y7 e gather from Wilson, the white man who did the killing, that he went to Evans' house on the day above stated to see him on some business. He carried his gun with him. Evans was not in the house when Wilson called to see him, and after srtying a few words to Evans' wife, Wilson went out. As he left the house, Evans came around the corner Of the house. Wilson turned to speak to liim and in doiDg so stumbled up against the house, his gun hammer struck the side of the house with such force as to cause the ran to fire find empty the entire load into Evans who was but a few steps away. Evans died in a few hours from the wound. Wilson was promptly arrested, tried and bound over to court under bond. Failing to secure' bond he is now in jail, awaiting the Criminal court; From this account.- given by Wilson himself, it looks very much like an accidental killing, and we sincerely hope it was, but we can't see how the magistrate could have . committed Wilson to jail unless there was differ ent evidence from the above. For a pain in the" chest a piece of flannel dampened with Chamberlain's Pafn E&Tra and bound on oyer the seat of the pain, and anothei" on' Jtie back" between ihe shoulders, will afford prompt relief This" is especially valuaole in casas where the pain is caused by cold and there is a tenden cy toward pneumonia. Rowls, of Hollands, Va., has to say below wilJ remember their own ex perience under like circumstances: "Last winter I ha;d la grippe which left me in a low state- of health. I tried numerous remedies, none of which did me any good, until I was induced to try a bottle of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy. The first bottle of it so far relieved me that I was enabled to attend to my work; and the second bottle effected a cure." Foi sile at 25 and 50 cents per bottle by F. P. Hun ter, Druggist. Congress adjotirhed over for the holidays and will resume work next week. A Card of Thanks,- Mr. FjDitok. Allow me space in your valuable paper to express my thanks in behalf I the inmates of the County Home for the good things that have been bestowed upon us during the Christmas holidays and on last Thanks, giving day. The good people of your town lead by that most estimable lady, Mrs. V. L, Pendleton, remembered the county's poor bouutif ully and pleasantly both 6n Thanksgiving day and the Christ- mas just past, and our hearts weie made to rejoice while the inner man was replenished with every eood and nice thing. May the good Lord bless, ave He will bless, those who have thus practiced sweet charity 5 Yours truly M B. Alston . ; Supx. of Co; Home Dec. 31st. 1896.' OASTOniA. It OTerr igiiest Stick to the jBridge that Carries We keep constantly on hand a large stock of "PIEDMONT WAGONS," and other standard work at bottom Prices with full Our Public Schoels. Most of our Public Schools in the county will be in operation within the next few days, and considering this to be one of the most important matters that all of us have to look after, a word to those concerned directly with the schools will not be amiss. We wish to emphasize what we said some weeks age about the employment of teaclier's-- that the best teachers are the cheapest, and not every one who hold a certifi cate, makes a teacher. The Examiner simply finds out from the examination he conduets whether or not the applicant has sufficient knowledge of the branches required to be taught to entitle him or heir to a certificate.' .Not every time is it a fact that those who hold a first grade certificate are better qualified to teach then one hold ing a second grade certificate. The teacher should be of the right kind in morals and temperament and should possess that rare character of being able to impart intelligently and impressively what he or she knows to others. Again, we insist th?tt no family ties, or kinship, or sentiment should have any weight with comaitae men in selecting a teacher. Get the best teacher possible, con sidering all the qualities and the needs of your district. To the patrons we wish to say that several years experi ence in the school room has taught us that you can greatly assist the teacher of youi children if yon will do what is light. Never speak dispairingly of your teacher before your children. Make them study at h'om'e; and see to it that your children attend regularly and are there on time. Uphold your teacher in the proper discipline of the school, and if you have a grievance against your teacher go to him or her about it and do not speak of it before your children. If the above suggestions to teachers, committeemen and patrons are ob served our schools will be much ;more efficient and mueh more good can be derived from the short school term we have. . The People Believe what they read about Hood's Sarsaparilla. They know It is an honest medicine, and that it cures disease. That Is why you should get Hood's and only Hood's.
