THE RECORD. PUBLISHED EVERY FRIDAY. J. C. HARDY, Editor and Proprietor. One Year, Six Months, Three Months, $1.00 .50 .25 1892, at War- Entered December 5th renton, N. C, as second-class matter, under act of Congress of Men. 3, 1879. FRIDAY, FEB. 11, 1908. The Republican full dinner pail is obliged to be filled with free soup in many instances. The Patent Office has just granted a patent for making pa per out of saw dust. This is sure to have a serious effect on the breakfast food industry. The North Carolina Bankers' Convention will meet at the At lantic Hotel, Morehead City, on June 24th. to 26th. The Conven tion was organized at Morehead City 12 years ago. Over eighty-seven millions of dollars of depositors' money is said to the tied up in closed banks and trust companies in New York, and the Republicans pro claim they produced prosperity. DEMOCRATIC HARMONY. The nearst approach to har mony where it is most needed in the Democratic party has been exhibited by the unterrified Democracy of New Jersey. The leaders of all factions joined to gether in a banquet at the New Auditorium in Newark in honor of State Chairman Robert S. Hudspeth who made the fight in the last campaign. Aside from the tribute to the chairman the object of the gathering of the 400 leaders of the party from all sec tions of the State was to get to gether for the redemption of New Jersey. Success attended these efforts for the names of Bryan, Harmon, Johnson, Gray, Culber son -and Daniel were mentioned and cheered with apparent im partiality. Harmony and victory were the keynote of all the speeches. As New Jersey, like New York, is necessary to success m tne coming campaign tins nopeiui outlook for all Democrats uniting for the support of any ticket that may be nominated is an omen of success that will encourage Dem ocrats everywhere. If the dis cordant elements can unite in New Jersey there can be no good reason for discord elsewhere. There are four families th (.1 u want dwellings in Warrenton, yet there is not one for sale or rent. We must have some dwel lings and store houses. Who will build several for rent? banks have Three more large failed in New York and there is said to be trouble with others. Meanwhile a Republican Con gress stands pat and is spending its time talking about compara tive trifles. The Republican leaders who were so boastful and lordly when things were going their way are now afraid of their shadows and stand in deadly fear of the political f uture in store for them. C. O. MOORE COMMISSIONER OF AGRICULTURE. Oar neighbor the Louisburg Times, is thirty-eight years old. The present editor, brother J. A. Tiiomas, has been in charge of the Times thirty-one years and he has made the Times a power ful factor in the upbuilding and of prosperity Louisburg and Franklin county. Bro. Thomas The name of Mr. C. C. Moore, former president of the North Carolina Cotton Association, has been mentioned for Commissioner of Agriculture. For two years Mr. Moore, largely at his own expense and without adequate pay, has gone all over the cotton growing belt of North Carolina helping by tongue and pen to organize the farmers against the; greed of the Wall street mony sharks. The cotton growing in terests of the State are organized to-day as never before. Mr. Moore has done more than anv other man to this end. That he has the ability to fill the position with honor to himself and credit to the State he has abundantly demon strated. It would be a graceful and merited recognition of Mr. Moore's indefatiguable efforts for the farmers of the State to place him in the Commissioner's office. The Snow Hill Standard Laconic. Superior Court in Session. The February term of Warren Superior Court convened Monday morning with Judge O. H. Allen presiding, and Solicitor Jno. H Kerr prosecuting on behalf of the State. The court officers, Clerk J. R. Rodwell, Sheriff R. E. Davis, with their deputies, were present and court moved off without a wait. The Grand Jury was drawn as follows: J. T. Reams, Cleve Stallings, J. Hope Bullock, J. J. Crinkley, A. G. Cverby, B. W. Powell, W. T. Robertson, J. A. Hudgins, W. T. Powell, A. A. Jones, J. T. Gupton, D. A. Fishel, foreman, J. W. Paschall, J. C. Harris, W. B. Felts, W. H. Riggan, J. O. Hardy, J. B. Phipps. Geo. W. Bennett was sworn as officer of the Grand Jury. The Grand Jury finished their work Wednesday and were dis charged. The criminal docket, contain ing thirty-five cases was closed Tuesday evening. A few of these cases were continued. With one exception, a conviction was se cured in every case tried. Solicitor Kerr is a terror to the criminally inclined, and his faith fulness in his effort to convict criminals, andhave them adequate ly punished is heartily approved by his fellow citizens. His Honor, Judge Allen is not only learned in the law, but is a man of great kindliness of heart, it 1 ana is nonestiy seemng to im prove the lives of the criminals that are tried before him. Our people, although somewhat skep tical, will watch with profound interest his effort to improve youthful criminals, by hiring them out to good men, instead of sending them to the chain gang; and will rejoice, if results are favorable. The civil docket was taken up Wednesday morning, and cases! are being tried at the time of go ing to press. The Mecklenburg Hotel. Chase City, Va., Feb. 12, 1908. Special to The Record: While the management of the Mecklenburg feel that the rates charged at this Hotel and Sani tarium have hitherto been consis tent with the superior service furnished, and healthful advant ages offered, yet in response to a sentiment which pervades our local cemmunities that ours is a resort more particularly con ducted for the tourists on account of the prices charged, we have decided that from February 15th, and until March 15th, 1908, the rates, as hereinafter mentioned, will be put into effect and guests chargen accordingly. If this re duction meets with the response we hope for, in the future it will be a fixture; if not, it will be necessary for the management to resume the prices which we have always felt were compatible with the first-class service of the Mecklenburg Hotel. This move is an effort on our part to place our accommodations and advantages within the limit of the modest purse, and to give all our local friends an oppor tunity to receive the benefits to be derived from a stay at this magnificent Hotel and Sani tarium, the pride of all Vir ginians as well as Carolinians. There will be no depreciations in ! AFTON ITEMS. We are having some disagree able weather. It keep so cold the farmers cannot get their cotton picked. Bro. Henderson Band and Minstrel. enjoys the confidence of his peo ple as has been shown by his election to the treasurers office for several terms. The whiskey makers and sell ers are already flooding the State with literature favorable to their side of the question, and they try to make seme of it appear that it is being sent out by temperance people. These people are using all kinds of arguments '-o divert and cnange the minds of the peo ple. As we have previously said there is a great fight before the people of North Carolina, and the temperance forces must get busy. The fight cannot be without work. Hun ter Drug Company, won We have talked with a good many of the farmers attending court this week about letting the Cotton Growers' Association go down. While some talked and acted very indifferently about the matter, we found those that are willing to put their shoulders to the wheel and try again. We are anxious to see Warren county do her share in helping to keep up the organization in Lhe State and throughout the cotton grow ing section. Let our people come together aud revive the organiza tion. We stand ready and willing to aid and assist all we can along this line. rj Inter 13U. OBITUARY. Mrs. Mary A. Robertson (nee Olanton) was born m Warrenton, N. C., Oct. 23rd. 1853 and died at her home near Grove Hill, N. C, vy 11 ivitiv OlSU. 1874, she was married to Bro. R Edgar Robertson with whom she lived happily to the day of her death. She was a member of the M. E. Church, South, at Bethle hem, on Warren Circuit, but her severe afflictions kept her from church for several years before her death which she greatly de plored. She loved to talk about tne church and the religion of Christ, and was always glad to be with the people of God. She was a good wife, a kind neighbor and a true friend. She was re signed to the will of God, and was frequently heard to say, during her last days, that she was almost in the arms of Jesus. Those who knew her best feel sure that she is now at rest. She bore her long illness with Chris tian fortitude, and, notwithstand ing her great suffering she was ever mindful of the comfort of those about her. On Sunday, Dec. 22nd. her body was tender ly laid to rest near the dear old home she loved so well. May God bless and comfort the be reaved husband and bring him at last to the home of the good. B. Special Notices. ijeap r IN A1EM0RIAM. The spirit of Mrs. Lizzie Foster Pritchard, wife of Jno. C. Prit chard, Esq., of Brodie, N. C.t took its flight to the upper and better world, on Thursday last February the 6th. 1908. Her family had been very sick, with that dread disease grippe. She made a martyr of herself, in their service, and fell a victim her love and devotion to her duty being greater than her physical ability. She was in her 46th year, a daughter of Wm. B. Fos ter and grand-daughter of Solon Southerland, Esq., both promin ent families of Warren, both of them holding offices of trust. She was the mother of ten children, three little ones went on ahead of her, to show her the way. Six sons and one daughter are left behind, all of whom, as well as lier husband, and this! writer have oftentime heard her say that she had no fear at all of death, but knew that she would meet and dwell forever with her parents and little ones in Heaven, and wanted the rest to follow. Her trials on earth were hard to bear, many and heavy. She was a cnurch member from early girlhood, her people being Bap tist, but she was laid to rest bv Rev. W. W. Rose, of the Method ist Church of Warrenton. It was a sad and heart breaking: sisrht when her four oldest sons bore the casket from the hearse and lowered into the cold earth, while one of her little boys wept alone, vliks juuugcB, uuu appreciating mis great loss. O Lord walk with her children and lead them to Heaven and to their beloved mother. This writer knew her well and feels that she is in the arms of Jesus our tender Shepherd. progressing A " i 5 1 fi T l t , xear vorK: ljet us near irom some of you throutrh the oolrnnns lne public scnooi closed here cf the Record Tell j last Friday.
