Of course they arc truthful If properly handled, but some ol Jhem1 are capable of the most bewildering antics. Here Is a method by which figures may be made to tell secrets In a way that will astonish those who are not informed about how to do the "figuring." Ask some person to put down un known to you a number composed of three figures say 7G2. Tell him to transpose the figures, making 2G7, and to subtract the lesser from the greater. Then ask him to tell you the first fig ure of the result, and you can tell him the entire number. For instance, your first number in the present example Is 762, which transposed makes 2G7. Subtract 2G7 from 7G2 and you have 43. The only figure that you are told Is 4, the first of the result. All you have to do Is to subtract 4 from 9, which will give you 5, the last figure, and the central figure Is always 0. So your number will be 493. This Is true In all cases where only three figures are used in making up a number. The central figure will always be 9 when the transposed number is sub tracted from the original number, and the two end figures when added to gether will make 9. So, knowing either tbe first or last figure of the result, you can give the entire number. A Natural Icehouse. A prospector discovered near Lewis ton, Mont, some time ago a cave that Is unlike any other yet found in this country. The entrance is an irregular crevice in the rocky ledge of a moun tain. The bottom is nearly level for a distance of 100 feet, where the cave widens to fifty feet A slight incline begins there, and fifty yards from the entrance the bottom is nothing but solid ice, which extends to a depth of two or three feet. The width of the cave varies from twenty-five to about 400 feet and the height of the roof from four feet to a point out of reach of the light from explorers' lamps. There is no water in the cave, but ex plorers encounter several currents of air that threaten to blow out the lamps. No one has been able to dis cover where these air currents come from. The cave is a natural icehouse. The Oyster and the Oyster Crab. The oyster has no eyes and cannot see when an enemy comes around to eat it. The first hint it has of the pres ence of an enemy is when a fish begins to swallow it. Then it tries to close its shell, but often it is too late. The oyster crab has eyes and can see its enemy, and It has legs also and can run away; but, alas, it cannot run nearly so .fast as the fish can swim, and so it is often caught and eaten. But the crab is cunning. It found out that it could creep into the shell of an oyster, and this It did. Here it could keep a sharp lookout for the ap proach of an enemy. When it sees a fish coming looking for food, it gives the oyster a little pinch, and the oyster instantly closes its shell, and both the crab and It are safe. Thus these two arc partners. The one protects the other. ( j The Friendly Microbe. We are constantly hearing of the dis eases and troubles brought about by microbes; but, as with everything else, there are two sides to the microbe question, and it must not be forgotten that there are good as well as bad among the ever present microbes. Where without the microbe should we get either our butter or our cheese', for Ave owe both to his fermenting ac tivities? "It is the microbe," says a medical man, "that makes our vinegar and is thus the parent of our pickles. With out it our loaves would be so many cannon balls. It gives us saltpeter, and through it gunpowder, and, be sides all this, it daily saves countless lives by preying on other less innocent microbes." a History Party. Much enjoyment can be got out of a history party. Each guest has pinned ou his back a slip of paper on which is written the name of a person famous in American history. No one knows what name is pinned on his back and is required to guess it from the remarks which people make to him. This guessing sometimes does not take a great while, and in conjunc tion with it have pinned around the room pictures of characters and scenes famous in American history. Why They Are Called Carotid. The carotid arteries, as the children have learned in their physiology class, are the two arteries that arry the blood from the aorta, the main artery, of the body, to the head. The origin of the name is somewhat peculiar. Carotid is from a Greek word mean ing to produce sleep, and the arteries are called so because the ancients be lieved that an increased flow of blood through them made one sleepy ChV cago News.
