Miss Rosa hmeed, a consistent member of the First Naptist church, of this city, departed this life on the lOth inst. Logan, teachers, Misses Lela P, Jani68, and L. A. Williams. The latest newspaper adventure is the Eatlern Enquirer, published at Weldon, N. O., with Prof. J. T. Hailey is editor, and O. E. Harris, Esq., is business manager. The En uirer presents a handsome appear nee, and will doubtless be au aid to the Sentinel in holding the East. This is ihd seventeenth paper started iu this State since the Emancipation, nine of which still survive. Died. In this city, yesterday morning, at half-pant six o'clock, of inflammation of bowels, Mr. Austin Jeffrey, who had beeu in poor health for aeveial months. He was a b -rber by profes sion, and wss held in high esteem by our citizens. The deceasvd leaves a wife and two children to mourn their loss. Death of the Rev. Lemon Shell. We regret to have to announce the death of the Rev Lemon Shell, a promi nent minister of the North Carolina Conference, which sad event occurred at his residence at 1'ineville, in Meeklen burg county, Tuesday. He wan about 64 years of age and had been connect ed with the Conference for many years, (lis sorrow-stricken wife and several children survive him. He hag hosts of friends all over the State, who will be pained to hear of his demise. Some of the yount men of this place have but little interest iu their soul's welfare. They sleep all the time of services. There will bo a young man from Chailestonin your city this week, and it is earnestly hoped that the people of Raleigh will treat him with duo respect. George T Wassom and II P Walker were run ning for a prize Tuesday morning, but the Colonel weakened iu his knees, Walker obtaining the prize. The closing exer cises were indeed grand. Mr. John Schenck says he will carry to the Fair pair of the finest horses in the State. He will com pete with the State. Mr. TP. R. Hinton will Uke to the Fair some of the finest hogs in the State. Mr. Hiutou will visit the Fair this year with view of com peting against the State in lh hog line, Hog raisers. Uke notice. Cheat ham, of Henderson, addressed the convention in an able manner in ad vocacy of the union. A large crowd was present. CONCORD HEWS. The town is healthy. Crops are fast improving since the recent raics. Scotia Seminary closes on the 10th. There are 22o students at Scotia. Mr. VV. I;. Coleman will carry to the Fair his tine cieam colored horses. President Price is to be congratulated on the successful termination of the first term of this school. SMITHFIELO ITEMS. Mr. C. L. Walton's school has closed. The session was the longest buuthheld has enjoyod for a number of years. Mr. F. II. Blackman is spending a few days in the town. He returns to Golusboro to-morrow. The "Rough and Ready" Fire Com- pany of New-Berne visited the town last week on an excursion. They were received by a committee of I. O. G. S. and D. S. At 3 o'clock p. m. they played a match game of Daseoaii, and at 0 o clock paraded the streets of the town. In the evening tne Samaritans gave a grand enter tainment at Bingham's Hall. Suit able music for the occasion was fur nished by the New-Borne band. The new board of town commis sioners are having the streets worked in every part ot the town. The ditches that contained stagnant water and impaired the general health of the town, have been thorouchlv uraineu. 1 ? . a j A heavy rain-storm on Saturday, the 2d inst., did serious damase to tne cotton crops in this section. There are no brick houses in the town except the court liouio and the county jail; but as the brick machine of Messrs. Thomas is the best oolored farmer in the county. In the management of a cotton farm be it said to be the equal of any farmer in tne county. Among the pleasant faces among tnn excursionists was Miss Johnny Hatcher, of Goldboio. She was the guest of Mrs. Betty Alford.
