THE TWO PORTB.ATTS.
BV WILLIE E. PJlBOR.
- - - , - - I
- A painter, in his rambles, me a chilcfiso beautiful,
that he determined to paint hia portrait and keep it
ever by him. Afterward, ne sought to find one the
very opposite. After searching njiiny years, he found
a fit subject in a murderer awaiting the m6ment of
I his execution. On inquiry, the painter discovered his
portraits to be of one and the same .person.
An artist roamed the wide, wide world,
. To etch the beautiful and true ;
i Ile sketched where Scotia's banner furl!,
. The chamc-is and the hunter too.
.He pictured England's scenery
And passed through'Enn's rugged isle ;
s Then, 'neath the suns of Italy, ;
5 His touch made canvass glow and smile.
. Ere long he met a little child,
So beautiful, so .seraph-formed
, That never in his dreams imost wild,. -.
Such image in his "mind had warmed.
.Til limn, this angel child,' he said, .
' His like I'll never see again ;
His form shall hover o'er wy head,
The antidote of care and" pain.' .
When to the painter trouble came,
; And evil pass-ions moved his breast
That portrait lyi tidied up a fiame, "
. . That bade, all evil be at rest.
'Twas then he said ' If I can find
. A being to Contrast to him ;
.The fiercest demon of mankind
Conceivable, hii form ril limn.'
Years passed away, ere met he aught
. Fit image for the artist's power ;
Then in a distant clime be sought,
. And found it irt a favored hour,
Vithia a dungeon's gloomy cell,
Chained jnihisUlnKist living tomb ;
Nothing hut curies from him fell,
Waiting the moment of his doom. ' .
The canvass 'heath the pencil glowed,
Arid soon t,he painter's' work-was done ;
liriished within the dark abode,
Unlit by one stray beam of sun.,

SOYER'S MODERN H0USEW FE
LIIIS is a work unlike the thousand humbugs of the day.
It is the work of one of the highest professors of the gas--trononiic
art. . It contains directions for the different meals
.witn economical hints too often neglected by our American
; ladies, but familiar to those of highest rank in England. The
directions for meals for" the nursery, and for comforts for the
sick room, are not found in any other book of the kind we
have met with. They are inva'luable. One receipt for m a'k
ing coffee, is worth twice the price of the book to any one
who values that delicious beverage1. When this becomes
amiharly known and practised, scolding of cooks will be a
historical reminiscence. We have tried the coffoe-receipt,
and. found it wan'ins not the receipt, but the coffee for it
disappeared magically. Don't take our word for it, but tv it
lor yourselves. Brooklyn Daily Freeman.

A Treatise on the Law of Executors and
Administrators,
IN NORTH CAROLINA,
By JAMES IREDELL.
'TMIE object of this work has been to exhibit the law as it
A now stands in North Carolina, in relation to the mat
ters ef which it treats. It embraces, therefore, the English
doctrines, so far'as they' are recognised in our own State, as
well as our acts of Assembly, and the decisions of our own
Courts on, the subject of WILLS, EXECUTORS and AD
MINISTRATORS. It is thought it may prove useful not
only to members of the legal profession, butalso to others who (
are so frequently cahea upon to undertake the indispensable,
important and responsible trusts of Executors and Adminis-
