LOST CAPITAL Fowler told the group that he believed the town lost the chance to become the state capital by one vote. In 1788 when the committee was considering 17 sites for the capital, 'Averasboro was one of thorn considered. ,< Old tlinen in the vicinity have related, Fowler said, that Joel Layton invited the committee to Raleigh and plied them with a po tent concotlm called "cherry bounce.” While they were still slightly addled they voted Raleigh the capital. Fowler said it Is hard to believe that Averasboro was once a large town. However, he explained, It was at the head of navigation on the Cape Fear and the river was the highway to the sea. He told at the product* carried on the river, and said it was the gateway for the new settlers, most of whom were Scotch. He concluded by paying tribute to these highlanders, who, he said, did not watt for a govern ment WPA, but went on fighting the river. The river beat them five times, and the last, when a storm in 1860 smashed every dam on the river, finished the battle. President T. J. Harper presided at the meeting and the speaker was introduced by Fred Thomas.
