Over Cartier ; May Battle Turpin NEW YORK HP Welterweight champion Kid Gavilan of Cuba was in line today for a middleweight challenger's battle with Randy Tur pin of England in March because of his Caribbeari-hurricane finish Fri day night as he stopped Walter Cartier in the 10th round at Mad ison Square Garden. His terrific finish in the last scheduled round against the heav ier New Yorker apparently saved dusky Gavilan from defeat; for he was behind in the official scoring before he achieved his technical knockout at 1:31 of the tenth ses sion. Referee Ruby Goldstein stopped the bout as brown-haired Cartier tried to rise from the canvas, where a right to the chin had sprawled him sideways. Cartier— with blood seeping from his nose, mouth and left brow—had taken' such a battering that he was be fuddled and helpless before he went down for the lone knockdown of the bout. Shortly before the knockdown Cartier had tried to walk away to the ropes, as if seeking safety from Gavilan’s machine-gun attack. CAME FROM BEHIND The Cuban “Keed" was well be hind in the scoring when he start ed his magnificient rally in the eighth round and increased its pace in the ninth and 10th sessions. Cartier, taking advantage of his weight margin—ISO M pounds to Gavilan's 151—forced the fighting in nearly every session and threw straight right body smashes fol lowed by left hooks to the head that slowed Gavijan and caused him to bend low to escape punish ment from the fourth to eighth round. The sleety-night crowd of 6,253 that was booing Gavilan’s bending tactics in the middle going gave him an enthusiastic ovation as he ended Cartier’s winning streak at 20 straight and tagged him with the fifth kayo and the sixth de-' feat in his career of 44 fights. For Gavilan, it was the ISth consecu tive bout in which he was unbeaten although he had been held to a draw by Johnny Bratton Nov. 28.
