tribes up there and become eligible
for some rights in connection with
this oil?”
“You want to be adopted there?”
asked Chairman Joe OWahoney,
Wyoming Democrat.
“We have already been adopted,”
explained Murray.
"Senator, I don’t believe they
discovered oil since you and I
have been adopted in those par
ticular tribes,” suggested Scton.
And the subject was dropped.
LEASES IN A HAT
New Mexico’s Senator Anderson
then broke in with his complaint
about the oU-lease lottery.
“May I Just bust out here how
and say I think the drawing they
had at Santa Fe was the most
disgraceful thing that the Depart
ment of Interior has conducted for
a long time,” he protested. “Un
questionably, the government could
have gotten millions of dollars for
leases put up for sale.
“One filling-station operator at
Santa Fe drew two numbers out of
the hat for leases,” added Ander
son. “Strangely, the men knew in
advance that they were the good
pieces of ground, and this filling
station operator has two $30,000
leases just by having the numbers
picked out of the hat. I think that
is going pretty far.”
The New Mexico Senator demand
ed that the Interior Department
“be required to come up here and
tell us whether this is a moden,
progressive way of handling oil.”
“I think,” he snorted, "if they
did the same thing for the In
dians in Montana, it would be ter
rible.”
Chairman O’Mahoney promptly
agreed that he “would be disposed
to call upon the elnterior Depart
ment to come up and eport N to us
both with respect o the handling
of hese new Indian landx and the
.system mentioned by Senator An
derson.”
FROM KENLY
