mspital. He told reporters that tell
ing her the news would be the

had to do. He told her on the fol
lowing Wednesday.

girl,’’he told Mr. Fleishman. “She’s
got more courage and more spunk
.than anybody 1 know.”
Merle and tier sister, Mrs. Per
skey, greeted Mr. Fleishman like a
long-lost brother,
“It’s so wonderful to see some
body from Dunn again,” she told
him. "L just loved the people of
Dunn. That’s a second home for
us.”
All during Merle’s stay in the
Dunn Hospital, citizeris pf the com
munity showered . her with atten
tion-cards, letters, toys and other
gifts. Even entire school groups
called at the hospital to inquire
about her.
Her daily, progress was a matter
of community-wide Interest.
“We just hope,” said. Mrs. Per
skey, "to find some way in which
we can express our appreciation to

ton) apd his staff at the hospital
and to the people of Dunn.”
News of Merle’s plight spread
through the big New York Hospital,
located at the comer of Madison
and 124th Street, and she’s getting
plenty of attention there.
It so happened that a wealthy
theatrical man Is a patient in the
same hospital, heard about Merle
and visited her. She was looking

man asked who she’d like to see
“Uncle Milton" fierle. What TV
fan wouldn’t?
To Merle’s surprise, Berle paid
her a visit the next day and
thrilled her with a couple of his
television numbers. He promised
to send Winched the next day
and to have some of his other
friends follow. Merle made a big
hit with her famed visitors, too.
“But I honestly think she got
