COLUMBIA, S. C„ (IP—'The ol
umbia Record said today the
national Democratic party prov
ed its inepitude during the party’s
convention in Chicago.
In its lead editorial, the Re
cord said “the national Democrat
ic confusion i-i Chicago, put on
under the kleig lights of television
proved conclusively to all who
read, saw or heard the goings on,
that the national Democratic
party of todav is not competent
to control anything—even its
elf.”
The paper charged the party
could not make up its mind, "take
the so-called loyalty oath farrago
as perfect a demonstration as
' could have been devised.”
The Record defined a Demo
crat of today as "a person who
doesn’t know his fractional mind,
even on his own party rules.”
The editorial ended with a
question, “how then can the
party affront the nation’s vot
ers intelligence by asking them
to return it to power and corrupt
ion?” .

DAILY CRYPTOQUOTE—Here’s how to work It:
AXYDLBAAXR
Is LONGFELLOW
One letter simply stands for another. In this example A is used
for the three L's, X for the two Os, etc. Single letters, apos
trophies, the length and formation of the words are all hints.
• Each day the code letters are different.

Is Out For Ike
RICHMOND, Va. —(IP)— The
Richmond News-Leader today en
dorsed Dwight D. Eisenhower for
president, the first time In the
newspaper’s history it has endor
sed a Republican presidential
candidate.
In the past. Editor Jack Kll
, fhtriek said, if the News-Leader
did not endorse a Democrat it re
frained from endorsing any can
didate. It did not endorse any
candidate in 1948.
“Twentv years of power have
left the Democratoc party ... a
victim of its own obesity,” the
paper said.
“To return a Democratic ad
ministration for another four
years, even with so able a man
as Adlai Stevenson at its head,
would effect no qprceptible
change. The same fat cats, grown
sleek on 20 vears of cream, still
would come fawning at the White
House door."
