ROBERT INSKO GOOD NEWS Before the time of Jesus Christ men were religious. i They attempted to “tie-themselves-in” with God. The great 1 orophets of the Old Testament progressively gained new insights into the wisdom and nature of God. Those men thought of God as personal, as Creator, as One loving that which He had created, as having a plan for man, as | ruling over the forces of history, as punishing wickedness, as rewarding good. However, it was with the coming of God’s Son, Jesus Christ, that the deepest insight was gained, that, the “Good News” had arrived. This “Good News”, of course, was the news of the mighty work which God in Christ had done for man. It is for this reason that the first four books of the New Testament are called Gospels. The word “gospel” is simply the Greek word for "Good News.” In other words, these four books are not simply biographical sketches of the work of a great man. They are more, much more! They tell the story of the long awaited announcement that the Redeemer of man kind had come, that the "Expected One”, “the Messiah”,, “the Christ”, had dwelled among them. It is not the purpose of the Gospels to just give an ! accurate account of the historical man, Jesus, but rather j to show Who and What He was, and to arouse the reader i to an awareness of what this “news” should mean in his ;life. By an act of God, He, God, dramatically entered the world in the form of man, in our image, and revealed to i us the way of life, the secret of life. Men before His time had hoped for life everlasting. Now they knew that it was ! possible, through Him. In his Gospel, St. John says, “These things are writ j ten that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through His ; name”. Thus to grow religiously, in the Christian sense, ; from reading the Gospels, we must read with this spirit, I a spirit of faith. We may read the Gospels as just literature and receive great value, but it is when we read them with ! faith in the Son of God that we receive our greatest re- i ward. The reward is a new life, one full of zest and hapi ness, one that “ties-us-in” with the Ultimate of the univer se, one that grants us new insight into human problems, and one that provides better judgment in the affairs of men. The four Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, are not mere sketches of the life of a great man. They are four attempts to declare the “Goods News” of God’s mighty act in finally*sending His Son and the benefits possible for mankind through this action. God in Christ has pointed the direction “for us men and our salvation”. We need only turn our lives in that direction to have life and have it more abundantlv than our highest dream. When a person does turn in His direction and seek His way, His life, His kingdom; the family, friends, society in general, can only say that it is certainly “Good News. Wednesday, September 24th.
