UP) South Carolina’s Negro voters are claim ing the credit for winning the states’ eight electoral votes for Adlai Stevenson. The state Democratic party, which classed itself as a private club, barred Negroes from mem bership until 1948. Then Federal District Judge J. Waties Waring ordered Democrat ic party membership opened to them. $ Stevenson won South Carolina by less than 12,000 votes and the Negro electorate held the balance of power in the state. Negroes ap parently voted almost unanimously for Stevenson. 12 TO 1 FOR ADLAI For example, in Columbia's largely Negro ward nine, unoffi cial tabulations show Stevenson polled 1.250 votes to 109 for Eisen hower—a ration of 12-1. The Republican slate of Eisen hower electors polled 9,376 votes. But they could not be combined with the vote for the Independent 53 PER CENT VOTED There were 626,140 registered voters in South Carolina for the 1952 general election and approxi mately 335,000, or 53 per cent, cast ballots. Os the total registration, an es timated 120,000 to 130,000 were Negroes. Most counties reported heavy Negro votine Tuesday and judging from the total percentage of the electorate that voted, some 50,000 Negroes cast ballots. Cpl. Byrd Is In Korea WITH I CORPS IN KOREA Army Cpl. George E. Byrd, son of Mr. and Mrs. Colon C. Byrd of Erwin, recently joined I Corps in Korea. A tactical command between Army and divisional levels, I Corps was the first of three to be organiz ed in Korea. Special units attached to its perform duties for some or all of the organizations under its command. Corporal Byrd entered the Army in March 1951. ATTENDING CONVENTION The Rev.
