S. C. Negroes Take
Credit For Victory
f COLUMBIA, S. C. UP) South
Carolina’s Negro voters are claim
ing the credit for winning the
states’ eight electoral votes for
Adlai Stevenson.
The state Democratic party,
which classed itself as a private
club, barred Negroes from mem
bership until 1948.
Then Federal District Judge J.
Waties Waring ordered Democrat
ic party membership opened to
them.
$ Stevenson won South Carolina by
less than 12,000 votes and the Negro
electorate held the balance of
power in the state. Negroes ap
parently voted almost unanimously
for Stevenson.
12 TO 1 FOR ADLAI
For example, in Columbia's
largely Negro ward nine, unoffi
cial tabulations show Stevenson
polled 1.250 votes to 109 for Eisen
hower—a ration of 12-1.
Richland County as a whole
4y en t to Eisenhower 15,387 to
'9,041.

DAILY CRYPTOQUOTE —Hare’s how to work it:
AXYDLBAAXR
is LONGFELLOW
I. One letter simply stands for another. In this example A. is used
for the three L’s, X for the two O’s, etc. Single letters, apos

Each day the code letters are different.
