THURSDAY AFTERNOON, NOVEMBER 13, 1952 T. E. L. Class At Benson Meets.. With Levinsons At the monthly meeting of the TEL Sunday School Class of the Baptist Church Monday even ing at the home of the Louis Lev insons the guest speaker was Mrs Bessie Oliver of Four Oaks, well known Bible student and eloquent speaker on religious subjects. Her talk before the class members war based on the 25th chapter of Mat thew and other Scripture pertain ing to the Jew and Israel, the homeland of the Jew'. Mrs. Moses A. Peacock, associate hostess with Mrs. Levinson, pre sided over a business session dur ing which time it was decided, as is customary every year, to re member the sick and the shut-ins of the church with gifts at Thanks giving. During the social hour the hos tesses served sandwiches, fruit cake topped w'ith whipped cream, and hot coffee. The guest speaker was presented a potted plant from the program directors, Mrs. Norman L. Duncan and Mrs. Claude C. Can aday, and a vase of cut flowers from the hostesses. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Turnage of iColumbia. South Carolina spent the week end here with Mr. and Mrs. Booker Lawhon. Rev. Ivey T. Poole attended a set-up meeting of church officials of the Raleigh Methodist Confer ence on Tuesday at Edenton Street church in Raleigh. Mr. and Mrs Willis Cagle spent the weekend with Mrs. Cagle’s fa ther, Milton Lee, near Goldsboro. Club Film On Health GLAMOUR SAYS:O Lillington Junior Woman’s Club, meeting Tuesday night at the Com munity Center, viewed a film, "De fending the City’s Health” in line with the club's emphasis this month on public health. Harnett County sanitary inspec tor Murphy Canady, originally booked to speak for the meeting was unable to attend. Mrs. Roger Hawley, club presi dent presided, and planS were dis cussed for the December meeting on Dec. 16. At that time suggest ions for gift wrappings, doorway designs and other holiday decora tions will be on display. Miss Jean McKay has been invited to give a showing of colored slides, which depicts noted paintings inspired by the Nativity. Club members voted to send a basket of fruit to the county home a't Thanksgiving and discussed other club projects, but no new ones were formally adopted. Refreshments were served at the social hour by Mrs. Leona Breed en, Mrs. Paul McDonald and Mrs. Hawley. MONROES HERE Mr. and Mrs. Graham D. Mon roe of Coral Gables. Fla., arrived Wednesday for a brief visit in Lillington with Mr. and Mrs. Sion Wilborn. The Young Peo ples Union had themselves a Sca venger Hunt and Tacky Party com bined. Old clothes and old hats were dragged out for the occasion all sorts of other things to add to the gayietv of the evening. We gathered at the church at 7:30 to get our assignments for the hunt-1 ing that we were to do. Each group had several items to find and the first one to return with all their articles won the prize. The fun niest thing was that one group went about 5 miles looking soy beans and all the time their was a field of them right beside the church! Everyone was back at the chureh gt the set time and the prize given to the winners. Miss Vivian Tart directed games for the party with everyone taking part. Tasty refresh ments of apples, nuts, and bottled drinks were served to Misses Mary Lou Core, Shirley Marie Strickland, Shirley K. Hairr, Louise Hairr Vivian Tart, Joyce Jackson and Mary Jackson, Mr. Hartwell Tart, David Herring, Jr„ Boyd Norris, George Taylor. Corby Bass, James Springfield and Wildon Strickland. Everyone agreed that they had fun and Hartwell Tart got the prize for being the tackiest. Get him to tell you how he was dressed. The WMU had its regular monthly meetings Friday night at 7:30. The R. As met at the parsonage for j their meeting and we have learned or heard that they are putting the parsonage garage to use. They are getting this fixed for their meeting place in the future. This week is also their Focus Week, keep up the good work boys. We are real proud of you. The G. A.s met Friday night al so, they held their meetfhg at the church. Berth the Junior and In termediate G. A.s met together since not all the G. A. members were present. Miss Ernestine John son was in charge of the program. The group adjourned to meet the Sunday November 23rd. Where O Where the SUN BEAMS at Friday night? Mrs. Flossie Lewis came to the church with all sorts of material for a Sunbeam meeting and only one little Sunbeam showed. Little Bon nie Jo Jackson was there and that was all. Hope you other little folk will be present for that next meet ing. Mr. and Mrs. Ercell Glover of Norfolk Va., spent the week end This wal meeting of all the circles combined. The WMS met Friday night too. with Mr. Glover's parents Mr. and Mrs. C. O. Glover. Mrs. Glover was also telling me of the illness of their daughter M*s. Thurborn Meeler who is a patient at Rex Hospital. Attendance at church was not as good Sunday as we had hoped it would be. If you were one bf those absent persons won’t you do something about it and be present next Sunday? Hope you will! Some people who were present for preaching services Sunday were Mr. and Mis. “Zeke” Naylor and daughter Isabelle, Mr. David Earl Wise, Mrs. Ivey Pope, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Dawkins and daughter Flor ence. We are glad you people came and won't you come again? We sincerely hope you will. Miss Ernestine Johnson was hon ored with a birthday party Sat urday night at her home at 7:30 p. m. Miss Joyce Lee was in charge' of the games. Several of Miss John son’s friends helped her celebrate her birthday. She received several nice birthday gifts. Lemonade, nuts, grapes, cookies and ritz were served to the Honoree and her friends. Saturday afternoon Miss Faye Phillips was> also honored when her family and several playmates gave her a birthday party. Alice Faye Jackson spent Sun day with Dwanda Glover and Kennith Glover visited Donnie Ray Jackson. Prayer meeting is now at 7:15 instead of 8:00 o’clock so W’hen you are planning to attend the prayer and Bible Study sessions don’t for get the new time.- That’s all for now but will be looking around for things to tell you next time - Bye now. Reporter, Mary Jackson Bishop Peele To Preach At Wesley Chapel Church Bishop W. W. Peele. Retired Me thodist Bishop will preach at Wes ley Chapel Methodist Church. Sun day morning, Nov. 30. Wesley Chapel is located on Highway 102 between South River and Spivey's Corner After the sermon the Bishop will assist the Pastor, The Rev. S. G. Dodson, Jr., in the administration of Holy Communion. Bishop Peele was the Bishoo of the N. C. Conference of the Meth odist Church up until last year when he retired and was succeeded by Bishop Paul N. Garber. Bishop Peele now lives at Laurinburg, N. C. ATTEND GAME Mr. and Mrs. Earl Westbrook, Jane Westbrook and Katherine White attended the Carolina-Vir ginia game in Chapel Hill Saturday. IMPROVING Master Larry Wayne Baird, who is a patient in the Duifii Hospital is improving. VISITING HERE Mrs. J. V. Ward of Portsmouth. Va., is visiting her brother, A. K. Gunter and family. An out standing senior at Duke University, the hazel-eyed contestant is 21 years old. She will compete* with girls from throughout the 18-state Cotton Belt for the honor of serv ing the U. S. cotton industry as it* 1953 (laid of Cotton on a glamor ous six-month intcrnrf.ional tour. Dorothy, a talented vocalist, is president of the Duke Women’s Glee Club and soloist with the Men’s Glee Club. She was chosen for the university beauty court. A member of Delta Delta Delta so rority, Dorothy also is active in Hoof ’n Horn dramatic society and in the freshman advisory council. Any girl born in a cotton state who is between the ages of 19-25, has never been married, and is at least 5 feet 5 inches tall is eligible to become Maid of Cotton. Judging is on the basis of poise, personality, intelligence and background, as well as appearance. Application forms are available from National Cotton Council, Box 18, Memphis, Tenn. Contest deadline is midnight, December 1. RETURNS FROM WINSTON SALEM Mrs. Charles Highsmith Sr., has returned from a visit with her son. Dr. Charles Highsmith who is a patient at The Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. His condition has improved and he is expected to re turn to his home in Troy in arouhd two weeks. FIREMEN ANSWER CALL TO THEATRE The Dunn Fire Department ans wered a call to the Harnett Theatre on Tuesday night at 8:50, Howard M. Lee reported today. There was small damage and it was confined to the marquee. De fective wiring seemed to be the cause of the fire. The firemen were back in at 9:15 and 23 men answered the cali.
