FRIDAY AFTERNOON, NOVEMBER 21, 1952 BOOK CLUB MEETS WITH MRS. C. L TART WEDNESDAY The Twentieth Century Book Civ* held its regular meeting on Wednesday at four o’clock at the home of Mrs. C. L. Tart on West Pearsall Street. A red and white color scheme w'as carried out in the living room and music room with bouquets of chrys anthemums, red berries, red and white carnations, and gladiolous being used. The guests and members were invited into the dining room where Mrs. S. N. Butt. Mrs. W. J. Thomp son* and Mrs, C. R. Butler assisted inVme serving of a delicious salad .plate, individual cakes and coffee; buffet style. Pink was the pre-dominating color in the dining room. On the dining table and auxiliary tables were arrangements of pink snaps and neruemia. Mrs. C. L. Corbett presided over the business meeting. She wel comed special guests, who were Mrs. J. R. The club voted to donate two one year magazine subscriptions to the Dunn Hospital. Mrs. Corbett turned the meeting over to Mrs. S. N. Butt, program chairman. She introduced Mrs. Henry Tyler who presented ! an interesting historical paper on Civil Strife of North Carolina. This I was the third program on the study of North Carolina for the club year. SPEND WEEKEND | Mrs. Bob Dickey and daughter, Jean, left today to spend the week end with Mrs. Dickey’s mother. Mrs. L. H. Kitchen in Scotland Neck. Mr. Dickey will join them on Saturday. ' 1 | ' .■* l. % Wm JANIE SMITH Jennie Smith Visits United Notions Seminar Miss Jennie Smith of Dunn was one of the nine students who rep resented Guilford College at a three | day United Nations Seminar held ' in New York City last week. The ! seminar was sponsored by the Na- I tional Student Y.M.C.A. and Y.W.C. I A. under the direction of Miss Jim i mie Woodard. ! The group arrived Thursday night. Friday was spent visiting United Nations sessions in action, interview ing del 'gates, and becoming fam iliar with the physical plant of the United Nations. Besides attending regular meetings of U. N. councils where the group could see the pariiamentiary pro cedure and simultaneous translation system in operation, the members had the opportunity to interview delegates from Iran, Egypt, and Yugoslavia and a representative of U.N.E.5.C.0., which has its main office in Paris. On Saturday the students visited the United States Mission to the United Nations, the home office of the United States delegates. Ben Brown, assistant secretary-general of the United States Mission, dis cussed the position of the United States in the United Nations, and the United States attempt at a consistent policy which, he said, is not run on the assumption that a conflict with the Soviet Union is inevitable. Saturday afternoon and evening was free for sight-seeing, plays, con certs, etc. On Sunday. Rev. James Robinson of the Church of the Master, Mor ningside Avenue, New York, helped the group sum up the implications of discussions held during the sem inar. Those attending in addition to Miss Smith were Chris Gidynski, Josh Crane, John Wright, James I Cox, George Hale, Willard Payne, ! John Church and Karl HeinhardL Chaperones were Professor Edward Burrows of the college and Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Smith of Dunn. Miss Smith is a sophomore at Guilford College and is active' in all school activities. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Smith of Dunn. HERE FROM MEXICO Mr. and Mrs. Ray Thomas of Roswell, New Mexico, visited Mr. (and Mrs. J. I. Thomas and family Wednesday night. The Mr. Thomases are brothers. THE DAILY RECORD. DtTNN, It. CL Brenda Norris Honored With Birthday Party Miss Brenda Gay Norris, small daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ashley Norris was honored with a birthday party Wednesday afternoon, given by her mother at the Norris home. The little guests enjoyed games and Brenda presented them with balloons, whistles, balls, and suck ers as favors. After the group had sung “Happy Birthday,” Mrs. Norris cut the cake which was in the shape of a baby basket with a pink doll in it. There were nine pink candles burning on the cake. Ice cream, candy and gum were served with the cake, after which the honoree opened her many nice gifts. Those present for the enjoyable party were, Dana Lou Hanna, Vic kie Wade. Off-Duty Club Enjoys Evening Os Bridge The Off-Duty Bridge Club mel for an enjoyable evening of play j at the home of Mrs. Rodney Chest riutt who was hostess on Thursday | at eight o’clock. | Fall flowers and berries were used in attractive arrangements in the rooms, where two tables were in * play. After scores were tallied, Mrs. Locke Muse was given silver sugar tongs for compiling high score. A pickle fork went to Mlrs. Johfi Green for traveling, and consola tion, a novelty pill box, was re ceived by Mrs. W.‘ E. Ryals. The hostess served chicken salad sandwiches, potato chips, pickles and brownies with cokes, and dur ing play, the guests enjoyed candy and nuts. Those making up the table were Mrs. B. A. Bracey, Mrs. Bart John son, Mrs. Rupert Wade, Mrs Hal Jordan, Mrs. John Green, Mns. Locke Milse, Mrs. W. E. Rials and the hostess. Wiener Roast Fetes Young People's Group Misses Joyce and Jean Ivev en tertained at a wiener roast for the Young People of Grove Presby terian Church on Thursday night at seven-thirty o’clock at their home on the Jonesboro Road. During the evening the guests roasted wieners and marshmallows, which were served with all the trimmings along with cold drinks. Following this they enjoyed danc ing. Members of the younger set pre sent for this delightful affair were Lib Lewis, Betty Ann Johnson, Bob by Jackson. J. T. Jackson. Tart, Faye Dawson, Faye Monds, Bobby Barefoot, Billy MESDAMES PEARSALL AND DICKEY FETE BRIDE-ELECT WITH COFFEE HOUR Miss Billye Pope, bride-elect of November 29 was honored Thurs day afternoon when Mrs. Billy Pearsall and Mrs. Bob Dickey were joint hostesses at a lovely ooffee hour from 4:00 until 5:00 .o’clock at the Pearsall home. Guests were greeted at the door by the hostesses and honoree and invited into the home which was thrown ensuite for the occasion. Beautiful arrangements of roses gladioli and other fall flowers were used In the living room, and a pit cher of huge golden chrysanthe mums was particularly outstand ing. Miss Pope was presented a yel low glamila corsage, and gifts of silver in her chosen pattern from Merry Matrons Have Party For Husbands Thursday Eve. The Merry Matrons Canasta Club members entertained their husbands last night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Cannady at the club’s annual Thanksgiving party. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Leak were guests of the club members for the party. A delicious supper of Griffin's barbecued chicken and barbecue was sewed with cole slaw, potato salad, hush puppies, hot coffee and choc olate cream puffs. Later in the eve ning cokes and potato chips were passed. Mr. and Mrs. Troy Godwin were the recipients of high score after twelve spirited hands of canasta and Mr. and Mrs. Ollen Jemlgan were second high scorers. The Godwins’ received appliqued towels and bath towels and the Jemigan’s received ful fall flowers were arranged to pillow cases. Attractive potted plants and color advantage paints in the Cannady home for the enjoyable evening of canasta play. Candy and nuts were enjoyed by the guests during play and fol lowing several progressions, trays of assorted sandwiches, date loaf and coffee were served. ' Winning men’s high for the eve ning, a sock purse, was Johnnie Wilbourne, and ladies high went to Mrs. Ed Welborn, which was bath cloths. Those enjoying the game were Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Wilbourne. guests of the club, and Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Stephenson, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Welborn and the hosts. All residents having clothing to donate to the needy for Thanks giving. please leave it on your front porches for the girls to pick pp. ATTEND FUNERAL Mr. and Mrs. Willie Moss atten ded the funeral of Frank Bailey in Henderson Wednesday. Mr. Bailey was formerly a resident of Dunn, son of the late Mr. Frank Bailey and Mrs. Bailey. Monds, Margaret Cathey, Jessie L. Tart and Doris Hinson. the hostesses. The dining room table was cov ered with a lovely linen cut work cloth and centered with an ar rangement of pink snapdragons and roses, interspersed with fern. Tall lighted pink tapers in silver candle sticks illuminated the room. Mrs. A. F. Pope, mother of the hononee, poured coffee and >tea from one end of the table and from the opposite end Mrs. J. N. Creel, served ice cream frozen in the shape of pink roses, and iced cakes carrying out the pink and white color scheme which predom inated in the room. Mints and nuts completed the refreshments.
