Godwin Youth Held
For Fighting Brother
A Godwin youth was found stum
bling on a highway with a bullet in
tlie back of his head late last, night
and county officers subsequently
overpowered and arrested his broth
er on a charge of felonious assault.
Highway patrolmen discovered
I Elijah Jernigan, 18. of Godwin. Rt.
iT, on the highway near his house
! late Sunday night. He was Inco
herent and they first thought he
I was drijnk until they found he had
been wounded in the back of the
head with a .22 calibre bullet.
They rushed him to Highsmith
j hospital where he told them his
brother. Jessie Allen Jernigan, 27.
had shot him after first discharg
This Blonde Does
Not Show Curves
HOLLYWOOD, HP I Lucille I
Knochs. that beautiful blonde on I
Red Skelton's television show, de
cided today she was all in favor
of censoring curves out of TV. i
Lucille’s have been, and she’s
not complaining..
She started on the program in :
a tight turtle-neck sweater and i -
shorts. But now 'she usually wears i :
necklines up" to her chin and skirts
that cover most of her legs.
“It was Red's idea,” she explain
ed. “His show goes on at seven,
and a lot of children see it. Now
I only wear a bathing suit if. the
plot of the show calls for one.
"Red thinks a girl looks as good
in clothes and gets as many
whistles as in a bathing suit, and
I agree.”
"You should show something, j
certainly, but let them guess the j
rest. It’s better to look like you’re
not selling that certain thing, and ;
W. Byrd presided and City Man
ager A. B. Uzzle, Jr., was present
, at the meeting.
After dinner an address on traffic
safety was presented by Mr. Jones
, ing a .22 calibre revolver three times
I into the*ground for no apparent
i reason.
Three patrolmen and three de
puty sheriffs secured a warrant
j went to the residence and ordered
I Jessie Jernigan to come out of a
bedroom in which he allegedly had
barricaded himself. When he fail
! ed to obey their orders they broke
1 down a door and came through a
window and handcuffed him after
! a struggle.
They said when they entered the
room Jernigan was in bed, cradling
a .22 calibre pistol. The weapon wgs
! not discharged in the scuffle.
Participating in the arrest were
that you have some other reason
besides sex for being on the show.”
Refcently Corinne Calvet sizzled
TV sets in a revealing gown. The
next day the network was swamped
with complaints. Marie Wilson’s
sponsor has forbidden her to wear
sweaters on her television show.
And even Faye Emerson and Dag
mar don’t go in for plunging neck
lines so often any more.
Lucille thinks this is uplifting the
culture of television.
"When TV first started all you
saw was curves,” she sighed. “But
I think a girl should have a touch
of sweetness.
"Now that fad for sexy girls on
television has died out. I certainly
don’t want to be one. I want to
do more character parts on the
I show. You last longer. I can’t do
] cheesecake 20 years from now.”
Skelton even changed her name
from Lucy to Lucille “to make me
' more dignified.”
