The Merry Matrons Canasta
Club and Mrs. Howdy Youngblood
who was a guest of the club were
graciously entertained when they,
met at the home of Mrs. Taylor
Stephens last night at eight o’clock. I
Dark red camellias in a Crystal bowl
were used in a lovely arrangment
and yellow jonquils intermingled
w'ith greenery completed the pretty
flower bouquets for the occasion.
Covers were attractively laid for
a salad course when the group ar
rived. Tempting refreshments of
chicken salad' on toasted rusk, po
tato chips, assorted cookies and
coffee were served, Later In the
■evening party sandwiches and
cokes were served.
Tiny Valentine baskets filled with
candy and other appointments in
keeping with the Valentine motif
were used in decorating for the
party.
In addition to Mrs. Youngblood,
members playing were Mrs. Betty
Bass, Mrs. Clarence Cannady, Mrs.
Marvin Godwin, Mrs. Ollen Jer
nigan, Mrs. Bob. Leak, Mrs. Lee
Sandlin, Mrs. Stephens, Mrs. Bill
Twyford, Jr., Mrs. Troy Godwin,
Mrs. George Williams and Mrs.
John Welborn.
Mrs. Cannady was remembered
with a box of candy from the
hostess. She will move to Eliza
bethtown soon.
Mrs. Twyford and Mrs. Will
iams were awarded antique china
plates as high score prizes. Second
high scorers, Mrs. Marvin Godwin
and Mrs. Bass were remembered
with crystal swans.
HOME FOR WEEKEND
Miss Jane Westbrook, student at
St. Mary’s School in Raleigh, Miss
Carolyn Westbrook and guest, Bruce
Brown, both Duke University stu
dents, arrived yesterday to spend
the weekend with Mr. and Mrs.
| Earl Westbrook. Another daughter,
I Miss Mary Ann Westbrook, who
1 teaches in the High Point Schools,

Ace Os Clubs
On Thursday evening at eight o’-
clock, Mrs. Frank Belote entertain
ed the Ace of Clubs and additional
guests at dessert bridge.

quince, nandina berries and white
glads added beauty to the sur
roundings.
A dessert course of delightful pe
can pie and coffee was served be
fore the game, and later in the even
ing, cheese straws and cokes were
enjoyed.
Special guests for the evening af
fair were Mrs. Herman Lynch, a
newcomer to Dunn and Mrs. Kath
ryn Hood.
After scores were tallied, Mrs.
John Snipes received a double deck
of Congress cards for attaining
high. Guest high, a wrought iron
trivet, was won by Mrs. Lynch and
second prize, a Toby mug, went to
Mrs. Dwight Mattox. A Goren point
count bridge book was given to
Mrs. Keith Finch for traveling
award.
Club members present were Mrs.
Mattox, Mrs. John Snipes. Mrs.
Finch, Mrs. James Snipes. Mrs. L.
B. Pope. Jr., Mrs. Joe Ruark and

terday to attend the two day Ro
tary Convention in New Bern.
VACATION IN FLORIDA
Mr. and Mrs. Bert Alabaster and
children left this morning for a
ten day vacation trip to Florida.
While there they will visit Mr. Ala
baster’s father in Miami and tom
other interesting sites in the State.
IN GREENSBORO
Lofton L. Tart, manager of the
Motor Credit Company, will leave
Sunday to attend a three day fin
ance meeting in Greensboro.
TO MOVE
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Cannady
will move to Elizabethtown soon to
make their home. Mr. Cannady has
been transferred there by the John
son Cotton Co.
IN FLORIDA
Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Butt and
family are now vacationing in
Florida. They are expected to re
turn around the fifth of February.

Feted Thursday

Mrs. W. E. Ryals was hostess to
the Off-Duty Bridge Club on Thurs- 1
day evening at eight o’clock.
The Valentine motif was appro
priately carried out in the floral 1
arrangements, tallies and refresh- 1
ments. Beautiful red camellias and
white narcissus were artistically '
used in the room where two tables ■
were set up for the game.

DAUGHTER IS BORN
Mr. and Mrs. Hunter Ogburn of
Willow Springs have announced the
birth of a daughter, Gloria Dare
on January 14 in Rex Hospital,
Raleieh. Mrs. Ogburn Is the for
mer Joyce Turlington of Dunn.

Miss Weaver *
Buried Today
Miss Mittie Weaver. 88, died at
Cornelius Harnett Boarding Home
near Lillington Thursday after a
long illness. She was a Harnett
native. Funeral services were held
at O’Quinn Funeral Home Friday
at 3 p.‘ m., conducted by the Rev.
D. A. Huffines, Jr., and burial was
in Harnett Memorial Park. There
are no survivors other than sev
eral nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Phillips
Dies At Her
Home In Benson
Mrs. J. B. Phillips, 77, died at
her home in Benson Wednesday
afternoon at 5:05 following several
years of illness. Funeral services
were held Friday afternoon at 3.
o’clock at the Benson Free Will
Baptist Church of which, she had
been a member for 59 years. In
terment followed In Banner’s
Chapel Church cemetery. Officiating
was Rev. J, D. Capps, pqstor. Sur
viving are her husband, J. B. (Jim)
Phillips; one son, Joe Phillips of
Benson; two. daughters, Mrs. A.
W. West of Bunnlevel, Route 1, and
Mrs. R. Young of Benson: one
sister. Mrs. W. B. Morgan of Red.
Springs: 12 grandchildren and
eight greatgrandchildren. >

Infant Dies
At Hospital
The two-year-old daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Kirby of Route
1, Dunn, died at 3:30 p. m. Thurs
day in the Dunn hospital. Graveside
services were held at 2:30 p. m.
Friday at Spring Branch Baptist
Church near Dunn. The Rev. Rich
ard Smith, pastor, officiated.
Surviving are the parents; a
brother, Bronnie of the home; five
sisters. Pollie Ann. Peggy Lou. Dora
Faye. Frances and Doris Jean of
the home; the maternal grandmo
ther, Mrs. Minnie Tew Phillips of
Fayetteville. Mrs. Kirby was the
former Dora Tew.

Cromartie, 80-year-old Dunn citi-
I zen, was reported as slightly lm-
I proved at Dunn Hospital this mor
ning.
Mr. Cromartie, pioneer Dunn cit
izen, wag admitted to the hospital
on Tuesday after suffering a stroke.
For the first time today, he was
able to recognize members of the
family who were at his bedside.
His condition is still quite critical.
As announced yesterday, the
Golden Wedding celebration of Mr.
and Mrs. Cromartie. set for Sun
day, Has been cancelled because of
his illness.
