Baptist Church met in the church
Monday afternoon at four o’clock.
Betty Dowd called the meeting
to order and mdney was taken for
the girls going to camp. Mrs. L.

bers about camp and told them
how much fun it was.

devotional and Mrs. Jack Pro-*
was in charge of the program which
was entitled “Youth Work In The
Church.” Taking parts on the pro
gram were Mrs. “Mike” Craw
ford and Mrs. Bill Oraham.
During the business session it
was announced that the members
.of the Guild and the Woman’s
Society of Christian Service Would
sponsor a barbecue on Thursday,
July the second. !
The barbecue will- be from Grif
fins in Goldsboro and may be'
bought at the Park Center. The
pork plates will be $1.25 and the
chicken plate $1.50. Tickets may
be bought from any member of
the two societies.
The Guild was very happy to
have a former member, Mrs. Ed
Kiser of Whitakers, present for the
meeting.

was blamed today for starting' a
$25,000 fire in the Gilmore Trust
Co. Building.
Firemen said the bird dropped
a smouldering cigaret butt into its
nest in an airshaft of the building,
and the nest caught fire.

Man Drowned
FAYETTEVILLE—A local auto
mobile mechanic was drowned
Sunday morning while swimming
with his nephew In Little River
about 14 miles from Fayetteville.
Coroner Joe Pinkston said Ed
ward House, 31, met death as a
result of accidental drowning. Kb
Inquest is planned.
House was swimming at Shoe
Beach, on Little River, with Oene
Ray Smith, If, of Bpring Lake, when
the accident occurred. The Smith
youth told s Fort Bragg public

that he saw House “kind of splash!
a little bit and then go under.” I
He said he thought House was
“just playing around and then I
didn’t see him any more until he
came up on the side and
rolled over and went under again.”
Fayetteville and Fort Bragg fire

ed to the scene and recovered the
body some five hours after House
disappeared in the river.
He was the son of John Martin
House and Flonnle Mae Vann
House of Fayetteville. He had at
tended public schools in Erwin be
fore moving to Fayetteville in IMS.
