Forest Freshmen were called, to get i
acquainted with, each other- It was
on January, 1938, shortly, after the
Christmas holidays, durfcg which ;
incidentally, Lennon worked in the ,
Wilmington postoffice delivering
special delivery letters and packages. I
The upperclassmen, after warn- |
ing President Lennon and other j
Freshmen officers against holding i
the “smoker,” broke it up with
rocks and brickbats, —and fence,
palings used for paddles. The pal- }
inis were ripped from a fence a- I
round Mrs. Perry’s boarding house
on Neath Faculty Ave., where the
Freshmen had gathered for their
get-acquainted party.
Alton and his roommate, Bobby
Fales—now Dr. Robert- B. Fales
of Wilmington—were beaten by
palings as they fled the s*w<*.
They got back to their room, No .22
EU Inn, with upperctasemen in
howling pursuit.
Quickly, a few friendly upper
classmen scrambled into the room
to try to heln Alton and Bobby. Two
of'these were Hershel, Alton’s bro
ther;-qnd Tom Wright of Shiloh.
The; upperclassmen ringed the
building. They began pounding on
the door of No. 93.
i “We want Lennon 1” they yelled.
1 They considered Alton the active
and symbolic leader of the Fresh
inan Class. " ‘
Tom Wright volunteered to be
Alton’s decoy. He Jumped from the
second-story window of pH and hit
the ground running.
Everybody started yelling: “There
.’goes Lennon!”
Wright ran through the woods
. and oii nut into the darkness with
the upperclassmen in pursuit. Alton
and Bobby were left in uneasy Pj»ce
at least for the rest of the night.
Next day, Alton and Bobby gath
ered up iron pipes and rigged up
ban for their door.

they were sitting on their beds In

There is no recorder serious flare
