The Dunn boys made a game of it for twenty minutes, but in the third quarter, the boys from the county seat doubled the amount the Greenwaves made that period to raise a 22-19 half-time advan tage to 34-25. And they maintained that twelve point margin through out the last quarter to win going away. , ... The high scoring honors of the game went, as it does many times, to one of the losers. Daley Goff collected six points in each quarter for a total of twenty-four points for the evening to lead both teams. Second high man for the game was Jack Long of lillington with fifteen. The visitors also had the third, fourth, and fifth highest scorers of the game as Bain (12), McDonald (10), and Howington (7), followed Long in that order. Turlington made six and Carter and Jackson gathered In three .apiece to round out the Green waves’ scaring; and Whittington and Kelly each made two for the rest of Lillington’s points. The boys from across the river THE DAILY RECORD. DUNN. N. C. seemed to have a pretty sound i attack and didn't have too much difficulty in subduing the Dunn boys in the last half. Lillington sewed first In the game on a free throw, but Dunn came right back to go ahead on a field goal by Mac Turlington. Then, however, the visitors scor ed two quick goals to go ahead 5-2, let Goff of Dunn make one, and then made five more on two goals and a free throw. Turlington sewed his second point of the game shortly hereafter on another free throw, and then three consecutive Dunn goals, one by Jackson and two by Goff, put the Dunn boys in the lead. 11-10, as the first period ended. Lillington scored first in the sec ond quarter when Long stole the ball and laid it in for two points. Goff countered with another field goal for the Greenwaves, but Lil lington came right back (to go ahead once mwe on a set shot from outside. Turlington then made his third free throw of the evening to tie the game up again and an ex change of field goals #lnt the game into a 16-16 deadlock. Lillington made two more free throws to go ahead, but Jackson of Dunn sank a,free throw for the Greenwaves and then big Mac Tur lington laid in a crip to give the Waves the last lead that they were to enjoy that night, for the visi tors came back to go ahead at halftime on two goals, 22-19. In the third quarter Lillington scored six points before the Waves finally hit on a field goal. Goff was the one to break the scoreless skein. To finish out the quarter, Lil lington hit on two tries from the flow, Goff hit for Dunn, Lilling ton, Goff, and the whistle. The last quarter was pretty even with Goff making six on three shots from the floor, Carter gar nering three on one goal and a free throw; and Lillington also making nine. The officials did their best to keep the game moving and, as a result, a better brand of basket ball was played by both teams. Only seven players saw action for the Greenwaves, four guards and the three regular forwards. Rack Whyte, Dunn’s bid for the all-county team, led the way in scoring again fw the Greenwaves, as she swished the cwds for nine teen points. Kack hit on thirty-five per cent of her shots from the floor and on sixty per cent at the foul line for the evening’s work. However, Alice Prince had the best'percentage in shooting for the Dunn girls as she made three of seven field goal attempts good and made her only foul shot of the night fw a forty-three per cent accuracy on floor shots and 1.000 oh free throws. Alice made seven points and also looked exceptionally good In her work under the backboard. Most of the Greenwaves’ rebounds were captured by her. Mary Lou Westbrook hit on three out of ten 1 for an even thirty per cent and made two of four at the foul line fw a total of eight points: The impressive work of all four Dunn guards played a deciding fac tor in the outcome of the game, as they time and time again stole the ball from the visiting for wards. A i. Kack Butt and Jean Sorrell teamed up to go out and get that ball while Nancy Jemlgaa would drop .back underneath the basket and pick up any girl that happened to get past these other two. When Jean Sorrell was taken out of the game her substitute, J.ean Strickland, kept up the good work as the Dunn guards held Lillington to 28 points. They switched assignments nicely without any confusion and it looks as if Dunn won’t have to worry aboutt he guard situatioa this year. Lillington scored first oil a free throw, but the Dunn lassies came back with three points by Kack White to go out front 3-1. Then the visitors countered with two goals, before Dunn collected five on one free throw by Mary Lou Westbrook and a goal apiece by Alice Prince and Kack White. Lillington scored two more points on another goal Just before the first quarter ended, 8-7. The • Lillington girls outscored the Greenwaves in the second quar ter. 10-6. Dunn scored first on a goal by Alice Prince: then the visitors hit on a shot before Kack White laid one in. After this, Lillington made three, Kack two, and the girls from the county seat hit on two free throws to end the first half ahead of Dunn by three points, 17-14. The Greenwaves came out of the halftime intermission with a bang as they scored ten straight points on three field goals by Mary Lou Westbrook and one goal and two foul shots by Kack White to go ahead 24-17. Before the quarter ended, how ever, the visiting girls had whit tled that seven point lead down to one on three quick goals while Dunn was held scoreless. But the Waves were determined not to let that lead slip away from them. Alice Prince and Kack White hit on field goal attempts early in the last period to give the home girls a five point ad vantage, then Lillington scored two on a goal, and Kack came right back with five more points on two goals and a foul shot to put the MONDAY AFTERNOON, DECEMBER 7, 1953 Contest (Continued free* pure one) other things, the possession of k wide circle of loyal friends and a] winning personality.
