Hospital Bed Is Automatic SAN FRANCISCO (UP)—The push-button age has now produced a completely mechanical hospital bed. The invalid’s “dream bed” can save approximately half a nurse’s time in these days when the nurs ing profession is badly understaf fed. Named the Beem Bed after its surgeon-inventor, Dr. Marvel Beem of Los Angeles, more than 10 years’ work and a third of a million dol lars went into its development. It was unveiled recently at Stanford University Hospital here. This is the first hospital to receive a per manently installed Beem Bed. An array of buttons along the shiny metal edge of the bed’s ad justable tray offers the patient his choice of services. If he’d like to wash his hands, for example, he presses the one marked “lavatory.” With a so{t hum of machinery, a gleaming porcelain wash basin rises to his side. Still another but ton causes a two-foot-square sec tion of the bed to slide off to the side and up comes a built-in-toilet complete with sewer connections and flushing control. Among other innovations are a built-in stretcher on wheels, called a “guerney,” an automatic bed os cillator, a “Balkan frame” for traction of splinted limbs and built-in scales enabling the patient to weigh himself while lying down. FOREST FIRST-AID KENT, Ohio (IP) Hemlock trees are the first-aid stations of the woods. Muskrats and bears use hemlock gum on open wounds as a dressing to keep out dirt and in fection, reports Martin L. Davey, Jr., tree expert. FIRE CALL NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (IP)—Three fire companies rushed to the burn ing house of Morgan N. .Holmes. He is the fire commissioner. BOWLING NOTE LYNN, Mass. (IP)—The “C” Sharp Bowling Club is made up of 18 to 20 persons from Greater Lynn. All members are blind. BROTHERLY MEETING HARTFORD, Conn. OP)—Driving to work, Francis J. Duntz and Ver nard L.
