PAGE EIGHT TREATS WITHOUT TRICKS Girl Scouts of Dunn are trying to help others this year In stead of just helping themselves. The group shown here are among those who will be calling on house wives today. In lieu of trick or treating, they are asking for donations of canned foods that can be distributed throughout Red Cross to deserving per sons in need. Mrs. Marvin Wade, Jr., East Cum berland Street, was happy to give her callers a Little Things (Continued from Page One) Dunn’s Kneepanters were in Washington to be received at the White House the next day by Presi dent Harry S. Truman. As soon as Griffith learned they were in the city, he had his secretary phone Taylor to invite them out to the game and to inform them that he had box seats for the whole party of more than 50. Griffith and the Kneepants got a bie ovation from the huge throng at the game that night, with news paper photographers’ flash bulbs popping all around. "He just couldn’t seem to do enough for us that night," recalled Taylor today. The little ball play ers kept him busy signing auto graphs and he filled 'all sorts of unusual requests for them. Taylor said that Griffith re tained his interest in Dunn’s Kne»- pants League and told him that such groups as his made an ever lasting contribution to baseball. Hie Dunn man and the great base ball notable kept in touch with each other as long as Griffith’s health permitted. B. Smith, Jr., who’s Just about the hottest Carolina fan in town, agrees that ’there’s a lot of truth” in what UNO President Gordon Gray says about the over emphasis put on football and other sports at Carolina ’But,” points cut Smittv, who doesn’t go along with Gray all the way, “if Carolina is going to compete with the big teams and be recognized among the great teams of the nation, the present policy can’t be changed much .. If they’re not going to stay big-time, then the school should Just completely drop out of big-time athletics.” That sounds like good reasoning to us Smitty predicts that Gray’s resignation as president will be accepted when the board meets again...
