+ Senator Sam Ervin Says — L*st week the Senate completed action on the farm bill and sent It to conferetice with the House to Iron out differ ence*. The bill i* a composite of many thine*. I am opposed to seve ral of them. Nevertheless. It re present* the beet approach that cotlej be had at this time. I voted for it on final passage OTHEE THINGS While debate on the farm bill occupied moat of the attention of the country Insofar as Senate busi ness was concerned, I do want to pcrtnt out that other bills of letter importance were acted upon. I am a member of the Legislative Review Committee. Before this group come all so-called calendar bills, await ing the nod to be brought to the floor. Last Monday we had a calen dar call and were able to get 161 bills'to the floor and passed within a period of two hours. This accom plishment was made possible by the great degree of cooperation from both Democrat* and Republican* who helped to expedite these minor bills. REACTION I have been asked several times about the reaction to the so-called Southern manifesto. My mall has shown an overwhelming endorse ment of it. Only if people have written to the contrary FOREIGN AID The President’s request for nearly M billion in foreign aid reached the Congress last week. It struck a stone wall due to some of its far reaching aspects, namely long - range economic obligations. I do not subscribe to the theory that increased economic expenditure.; can produce peace and security. I do favor military assistance to those countries that are honestly building their defense against com munism, and I endorse limited amounts for technical assistance. But heavily increased spending as requested by the President's me - sage will find objection in Congress The administration will have to make a very good case or it will fall in its request. THE FALLEN DESPOT Demcorcy certainly has a right I to chuckle over the plight of the fallen despot, the late Joseph Stalin It must be a ridiculous matter for the Russians to have to rewrite history every time dictators change. This should be a lesson to us and the word to not put any great trust in the performance of commun ists, whether they are the new or old models, smiling ar tense.
