Air Chief Says
If Will Keep
US Supremacy
WASHINGTON <W — Air
Secretary Donald A. Quarl
es said today the adminis
tration’s Air Force budget is
big enough- to enable this
nation, and its allies, to
maintain air supremacy over
the Red bloc.
Quarles made the statement as
the Senate headed for a showdown
vote late today on a Democratic
move to boost the Air Force bud
get by $1,160,000,000. The bulk of
the money would go for more B52
strategic bombers.
Quarlea defended the adminis
tration’s original Air Force bud
**t as* adequate in testimony be
fore a Senate Armed Services sub
committee.
Could the Air Force use an addi
tional 500 million or billion? “1
can’t say I can’t use it,” he re
plied, but.
“I regard the budget which Presi
dent Eisenhower presented in
January, along with the supple
mental request in April, as an
adequate basis With which to work
out our program in the coming
fiscal year.”
He said that the U. S. fleet of
B47 bombers, with their tank
planes and overseas bases, new
isa “the most powerful striking
force on earth.” He said this will
remain true in 1859. By then, the
Air Force also wkl have inopera
tion, ander present administration
plans, about. MO longer -
range' B52’s.
At a Whte House legislative con
ference, administration spokesmen
urged Republican leaders to hold
the line against the Democratic
move.
The administration insisted it
wants no increase at all in the
pendng Air Force budget. But it
said it would accept a compromise
500 milloin increase offered by
Republican senators rather than
the biggest boost pushed by the De
mocrats. The Democrats had the
edge.
