Whereas The above named slave cabin was moved to the battlefield as the outgrowth of Miss Sue Smith’s work and ef forts and the assistance of the Board of Trustees of the Chicora Chapter 801, United Daughters of the Confederacy composed of Miss Sbiith, Mrs. Arthur F. Pope, mid Mrs. Nathan M. John son, ST. The cabin was removed from Lebanon the Smith home on the Battlefield, and presently occupied by a. descendant: Eu gene Smith and hit family a gift from MV. and Mks. Smith, de sirous of making a special histor ical contribution to the War Be tween the States Centennial years., and Whereas the NC Department of Archives ad History cooperated fully With this project, assisting in the restoration by giving spec ifications which were historical ly worthy and authenlc, under the chapter presidency of Mrs. J. Shepard Bryan, and completed under the current president, Mrs. Arthur F. Pope, and Whereas Sunday, May 15, 1963 at Confederate Memorial Day exercises held at Chicora Ceme tery on Averasboro Battlefield, the Cabin, complete with furish ings was formally presented from Eugene W. Smith Jr. at whose ancestral home “Lebanon” th cabin formerly stood, and Whereas the President of Chi cora Chapter TXDC, Mrs. Arthur F Pope accepted the cabin for the Chapter and presented, the completed cabin to the people of Harnett County and the State of N.
