ENGAGED - Miss Patsy Ann Barefoot’s engagement to Dallas Melvin West, son of Mr. and Mrs. George West of Spring Lake, is announced by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Garland Barefoot, also of Spring Lake. The wedding is planned for November 22. Historian Gives UDC Program The Battle of Averasboro Chapter 2320, U.D.C., met at the home of Mrs. Melvin J. Weeks, the president, last Tuesday evening. The meeting was called to or der by Mrs. Weeks, who led the U.D.C. Ritual. The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the U.S. and salute to the Flag of the Confederacy and to the Flag of N. C. were led by Mrs. Kay Tripp Tart. After the business special an nouncements were made inclu ding a report -by Mrs. Weeks on the convention held in Raleigh. The Chapter won two awards for being the leading chapter In the state in the increase of mem bership. The chapter won ho nors by being an honorary and superior chapter. Mrs. Weeks commented on the tea that wag given in honor of the delegates, visitors, and presidents to the U.D.C. convention. Mrs. Rachel Lee Paul, N. C. Division Trea surer, an honorary member of the Chapter was in the receiv ing line at the Governor’s Man sion. . Mrs. Hubert Lee, the new his torian, gave a very interesting program on General William Towther Jackson, Stonewall Jackson’s cousin. Those present were Miss Mel ba Hardin, Miss Mattie Gainey, Mrs. Kay T. Tart, Mrs. Katie Wiggins, ilrs. Hubert l^e, Mrs. Thomas Ralph, Mrs. Olen Mc Leod, Miss Pam Lee, Mrs. Flora Ivey, Mrs. A. P. Barefoot, Mrs . Beulah Lundberg, Miss Sue Ivey and Miss Jean Ivey. Refreshments were served at conclusion. Another meeting of the group will be held Tuesday night at 7:45 at the home of Misses Mat tie and Katie Gainey. IN FAYETTEVILLE Lula Horton spent Friday in Fayetteville shopping. Also here for the week end were Johnny Godwin and 3axter Stirling from Frederick Military Academy. , Church Women To Hear Gene Maxwell On Wednesday the Woman’s Society of Christian 8er>5ce and the Wesleyan Service Guild of Divine Street Methodist Church will observe Quiet Day as part of “A Call To Prayer and Self Denial”. The leader for the day will be Miss Gene Maxwell, associate se cretary of Children’s Work of the Woman’s Division of Chris tian Service from New York City. Miss Maxwell comes from Wil liamsport, Pa., where she was a home economics teacher before becoming a deaconess in the Methodist Church. She is a graduate of Scarritt' College and has been a rural worker and a Director of Christian Education in Wisconsin before coming to her present post as secretary of Children’s Work for the Wom an’s Division in 1960. Miss Maxwell has been, very closely associated with the writ ing of new curriculum material for children which will be introd uced for the first time in Metho dist churches In September, 1904. The Quiet Day observance will be at 11:00 o’clock followed by lunch and the Wesleyan Service Guild service will begin at 5:30 and have supper followed by a closing mediation. Henderson officiat ed. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Cau dill of Four Oaks are the bride’s parents. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. a-d Mrs. Edward Knight of Smithfield. Given in marriage by her fa ther, the bride wore a chapel length gown of satin and Chan tilly lace, with scalloped neck line and bell shaped skirt. Her veil was attached to a crown of beads and rosettes and she car ried a Bible, topped with roses. The bride designed and made her gowrC Matron of honor was the bride’s sister, Mrs. Carolyn Hud son.
