I Tally Ho Meets Thursday Mrs. Billy Monds was hostess to the Tally Ho Canasta Club when it met Thursday evening. During play crackers and: Cokes were passed Mrs. Murphy Upchurch pcored high for the evening, while low was awarded to Mrs. John David Lee. Bingo prize was won by Mrs. Bobby Tart. Apple turnovers, ice cream and coffee were served to Mrs. Earl Murphy, Mrs. Murphy Upchurch, Mrs. W. T. Harris, Mrs. John Da vid Lee, Airs. Bobby Tart, Mrs. Billy Monds, and Mrs. Tommy Richardson. During the evening the club members presented Mrs. Tommy Richardson with baby gifts. TO ATLANTIC BEACH Mr. anld Mrs. H. C. Bridgers and daughter, Diane, spent the weekend at Atlantic Beach. TO FAIR Mr. ad Mrs. Pete Stewart and Miss Judy Langley will spend se veral days this week touring the New York Tiorld’s Fair. Births Mr. and Mrs. Paul Puryear of RFD, Dunn, announce the birth of a daughter, Donna Grace, Monday morning in Betsy John son Hospital. Mrs. Puryear Is the former Linda Grace Horton of Dunn. Mr. and Mrs.. Ernest R. Step hens of Rt. 2, Lillington; an nounce the birth of a daughter in Good Hope Hospital Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Eldridge Stanley of Four Oaks, announce the birth ot' a daughter in Betsy Johnson Hospital Saturday. The mother is the former Linda Gayle Parker. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Knowles of Rt. 1, Godwin, announce the birth of a son Saturday in Betsy Johnson Hospital. The mother is the former Shirley Geraldine Warrick. AT WHITE LAKE Spending the weekend at White Lake were Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Weeks and family, and Mr. and Mrs. M. G. Wright and family and Bobby Parker. Something New-Whipped Strawberry Ice Box Cake In our present modern age when food markets ape stacked with frozen foods, strawberries are a mong many varieties of fruits and vegetables one can enjoy every day of the year A new way to serve the berries is called whipped strawberry ice box cake. It is made with frozen strawberries and garnished with the fresh green-stemmed variety (when in season). The cake is prepared similiarly too the old-fashioned teaberry fill ing cake with two layers of plain white cake cut through the middle, yielding four rounds. Each layer is frosted with the creamy pink frosting and stacked tqgetjjar to. make a beautiful high cake. Serve it plain when fresh and the next day with milk when it taste like everybody’s favorite - strawberry shortcake. WHIPPED STRAWBERRY ICE BOX CAKE 2 9-inch white cake layers 1 pkg. (10 oz.) frozen strawberries juice from strawberries plus water to make 1 eup 1 3-oz. pkg. strawberry Jelio Y> cup marshmallow whip 1 cup undiluted rva ported milk 2 tablespoons lemon juice Split cocl cake layers crosswise making 4 cake rounds. Defrost strawberries and drain juice add ing water to make 1 cup of liquid. Heat to liquid boiling point. Place jello in bowl and dissolve by add ing hot liquid. Stir and add marsh mallow whip. Stir until well blend ed. Chill until as unbeaten egg white consistency. Chill milk in ice trays until ice crystals form around edges, appro ximately 10 to 15 minutes. Whip milk until stiff (1 min.) Add le mon juice and whip until very stiff, perhaps ,2» mins, longer. Blend strawberries and marshmallow mixture into whipped milk until well blended. Spread efech cake layer with mixture. Place in re frigerator individually until set (approximately 20-25 mins). Re move from refrigerator and stack cake layers, the rounded ones on top and bottom. Garnish with whole fresh strawberries, which have been washed, but not hulled. Re frigerate until ready to serve. Catherine Neal Byrd Weds Medical Student Saturday After a wedding in Sardis Pres byterian Church in Linden and a reception at the Chicora Country Club Dunn, Joseph Rowland Hedg peth and his bride, the former Miss Catherine Neal Byrd, left for a wedding trip Saturday to Sea Island, Oa. They will be at home in Wins ton-Salem, where Mr. Hedgpeth is a third-year medical student at Bowman Giay School of Medi cine. He is a Duke University graduate, <>nd a member of UPi Kappa Alpha fraternity. His bride was educated at Sal em Academy and Greensboro Col lege and will teach in the Wins ton- Salem City schools. The oride’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Henry Byrd of Lin den. The biidegroom’s parents are Dr. and Mrs. Louten Rhodes Hedgpeth. of Lumberton. Her maid of honor was Miss Surprise Dinner Sunday Honors Mrs. Lucas A surprise birthday dinner was given Sunday for Mrs. Haywood Lucas of Erwin, who is 87 years “young” today and, in her own words, “still growing strong.” The dinner was given the veteran Erwin resident and Indian corn grower at the park center in Er win by her four daughters, three sons, and grandchildren. A resident of Erwin for more ;han 50 years, Mrs. Lucas has, in addition to her four daughters and ;hree sons, 14 living grandchild ren, 27 great-grandchildren, and me great-great grandchild. Relatives of Mrs- Lucas attend ed the dinner from Wilson, Angier, Durham, Cary, Raleigh and Dunn The invocation was given by Mr. Lucas* pastor, the Rev. Frank A. Daviscm, minister of the Erwin Presbyterian Church. He, Mrs. Davison and their three children Honoring their mother, with the assistance of their own children, were: Mrs. L. I. Pate, Mrs- S. H. Harrington, and Mrs. William H. McDonald, all of Erwin: Mrs. Mark 3. Wade of Dunn; Henry and Au iurn Lucas of Erwin, and Wade Lucas of Raleigh. A 10-pound cake topped off a jqgintiful picnic ' dinner served Mrs. Lucas and others present. were special guests dan. Barbara Blackwelder of Lenoir. Bridesmaids were Mrs. Monroe Cowan of Murray Hill, N. J., Miss Rosemary Adair of Erwin, Mrs. Jack Upton of Greensboro, Miss Eleanor Brown of Charlotte, Mrs. Louten Heogpeth Jr. of Lumber ton and Miss Harriet Calhoun of Laurinburg. Mr. Byrd gave his daughter in marriage. She wore a formal gown of peau de soie. The bodice, skirt and chapel train were lavished with reembroidered alencon lace. The bride wore a Brussels lace veil held by a cap of heriloom rosepoint lace from her maternal grandmother’s wedding gown .She carried orchids and lilies of the valley. Dr. Hedspeth was his son’s best man. Louten R. Hedgpeth Jr. of I.umberton, brother of the bride groom, and Jesse H. Byrd Jr., bro ther of the bride ushered with Stewart B. Priddy of Springfield, N. J., Joseph Weinstein of Lum berton, Samuel Douglas of Cha pel Hill and Albert Thornton Jr. of Clinton.
