Defendant Is Fined $15 ? Witnesses Almost Landed Up In Jail The cue of Edward Eugene Poole, 29, of Selina, charged in Dunn city court with speeding and driving with an expired license, turned out to be more than a rou tine traffic trial. Three lady companions who tes tified in ah attempt to exoner ate Poole of the charges almost went to jail for contempt of court. Poole was indicted after an acci dent by State Trooper W. T. Har ris on Saturday night, July 19. At the time, Poole said, he was en route to Sherrill Coats’ grill, ac companied by two teenage girls, an older woman and a man. IT* accident occurred on the old fairground road. Two Benson teenagers, Steve Dixon -and Ti mothy Johnson, eye witnesses, testified for the State. They said Poole lost control of the car on a curve and overturned in a ditch. The girls who testified for him were: Miss Phyllis Parrish. 16, of Micro, who said she had lived in a Brenda Avery, for the past three Brenla Avery, for the past three months. She said Poole was forced off the road by an approaching car. , Her 18-year-old sister, Mrs. Blan- , che Martinez, married to a service- j man now in Germany, and Mrs. | Helen Stanley, 49. of Selma, also testified for him, as well as the other man. Judge Hill critized the conduct of the two teenage girls, particul arly the 18-year-old who lived "without means of visible support.” The girls wise-cracked back at the judge with some snappy remarks. "I’ll hold all three of you for contempt of court if you don’t leave this courtroom right now,” warned His Honor. Judge Hill fined Poole $15 and took his license.
