Cameron of the County Board of Commission ers today wholeheartedly endor sed thg $100 million school bond issue for building construction and appealed to other citizens to vote fcr it next Tuesday. He said a vote in favor of tne issue would not Increase State tax es but warned that failure to ap prove the State bonds would res ult in heavier property taxes in the county because the building must be done. Following is the complete text of Mr. Cameron’s statement: “On November 3, the people of North Carolina will vote whether the State should issue $100 million in bonds to help counties build tchools On behalf of the Board of County Commissioners, I urge all voters in the county to vote iOK these bonds." “At the present time, schools are constructed from the proceeds of property taxes, and total pro perty taxes are becoming very I burdensome. For the State as a whole, county property taxes have more than doubled in the last ten years, to meet rising school, wel fare, health and other costs’’ “Municipal taxes have also dou bled, with the result that the to tal property tax bill in North Carolina now amounts to $250 mil lion a year. Sixty per cent of this comes from taxes on homes, farms, and individual personal properly end 20 per cent comes from bu ildings and inventories of stores, shops, and other commercial es tablishments. The re^t comes from ’ndustries and utilities.’’ “It has been estimated that school construction in the next I’ve or six years must total $400 million If we are to build class rooms that our children need. If counties are to meet these needs from property taxes alone, our tax rates for school construction will have ’o be doubled- This would impose a tremendous burden on the property tax. But w»th $.100 million in help from the State, as would be provided from the pro posed State bond issue, ‘the goal can be reached." “Our State officials have assur ed. us that the proposed State bond issue can be repaid without any increases in State taxes. But if the bond issue is defeated, it ic clear that county property tax e.; will have to be increased. And the increase will be substantial In terms of present assessed val uations, $100 million is equivalent to 88 cents on every $100 of ass essed valuation in the State.’’ “For these reasons, the people of this county should vote FOR tne State Bond Issue on November 3. It will not increase their State taxes. But if 'the bond issue fails and school needs have to be met from property taxes alone, they will certainly have to pay higher property taxes. ALEX M. CAMERON Chairman, Board of County Com missioners. Messer Services Conducted Today Joe H. Messer, 78, of Dunn, di ed Thursday. I have voted for genuine improvements in the sys tem Since I have been in the Senate. Recognizing the important role being filled by Social I Security, we can and should, of course, make improvements from time to time in such areas as the financing and operation of | the system. 1 I supported the 1956 a. | mendments to the Social Security Act and, in 1958, 1 voted to raise benefits so that their value in terms of purchasing power would be preserved. I voted in 1956 to lower from 65 to 62 the age at which all women could claim OASI benefits. These are worthy improve ments in the Social Secur ity system, enabling it to serve us better in fidfilling its fundamental purpose. These improvements should be clearly distin guished from schemes de signed to alter that pur. pose and, thereby, to over burden the system.’* VOTE GOLDWATER For PRESIDENT In Your Heart You Know He's Right Harnett Committee For Goldwater - FRIDAY EVENING - OCTOBER 30, 1964 t 5:00 (7) Funny Page (11) Fun Hour (9) Mavrtck 5:30 (7) Bock ana mends (11) Manilla Gorina 6:00 (1#_7) News Weather Spts (11) News (5) Dateline (4) News C:15 (4) The Frelndly Giant G:20 (5) Ron Cochran 6:30 (7) Huntley .
