I check for you Letter To The Editor: TO THE EDITOR: Since Tobacco entered the Politi cal atmosphere it has had ever in creasing troubles on many many fronts, with the United States Health Department, with Foreign Producers, with Manufacturers and Purchasers. Many persons feel that the problem began with the depart ure from the basic law of supply and demand, and that it will grow and continue until it returns. The program among other things, created a monopoly or closed Corp oration in the hands of the original growers and disfranchised non growers. In our eagerness to main tain high prices, we have encour aged the purchasers and manufac turers to seek production in for eign fields with cheap production cost to sustain their one self in come margin, and so we have in a way priced ourselves out of the market. Further we have from time to time cut the original allotments about 50% and still we produce more and more pounds that the government must buy as surplus and pay storage costs, all at the expense of the people. Also we have forced many farmers to aban. don their farms and seek employ ment elsewhere at the loss of their improvements and equipment and others to become marginal farm ers, who must seek work in other ,< fields or become members of the | relief rolls. And so the program ‘has multiplied the problem and the future of tobacco is uncertain and no one appears to have any recipe or prescription. The Farm Bureau plan seems a severe immediate major operation, > and Nwhile it {nay not kill off many tobacco farmers, yet it will certain ly greatly increase marginal opera tors, who will have to seek outside employment or Join forces of unem. ployees or became rpembers of the welfare rolls or poverty victims. It appears that the solution if any there be, lies in the production of better high quality tobacco, that will meet competition and satisfy the purchasers and manufactures. So why not stop talking so much about acreage and poundage, and begin to seriously talk and think about how to produce better high quality tobacco, and this before we consider abolishing the program and return to the law of supply and de mand?
